Uncle Ed columns mix playful satire and current events from December. The note highlights a Las Vegas senator-elect, Mussolini’s generals, and humorous vignettes from meatpacking, theater signs, and the Inaugural Parade, with quips about ghosts of politics and modern life.
Ted Renfro of Lima won the Montana flyer championship for a fourth time at the Sher idan Gun club event held Sunday. Renfro and Justin Brundage tied 23 of 25 in round one. Renfro claimed the title in a shoot-off. About 30 shooters and roughly 900 birds participated. the 1940 champion also held titles in 1931 1932 and 1938. Beaverhead artillerymen from Dillon and nearby towns competed.
A grade and high school student program at the P T A meeting ran Tuesday at 8:00 in the high school music room. The show opened with sixth grade carols and included a song and dance number That’s What I Want for Christmas led by Jackie Selvidge as soloist. A Christmas Fantasia duet followed by Verl Sargent and Dorothy Tyro. The high school mixed double quartet closed with two folk songs. Clarence Holter and wife returned to Dillon from Albuquerque for the holidays.
Beaverhead county high school dramatics club staged The Murder of Moneybags Blackstone at a Reichle PTA meeting with remarks by district leaders and coach Sut ton. James Hier and Jeanne Barlow wed Saturday with attendants Genevieve Burley and William Burgess. Viola Withington and Harvey Withington wed Thursday by Rev Lechner in Dillon.
Commencement at the college auditorium honors two bachelor of science in education and six two year diplomas awarded by President Sheldon E. Davis. Seniors Hagerty of Butte and Anderson Harris of Dillon receive degrees. diploma graduates include Blakely Townsend Gilbert Dillon Johnson Browning Patrick Sommers Straatveit Luther and Sweet Butte.
An invitational dance with the Elks drum and bugle corps is set for the Elks home next Saturday December 21. A members only dance on New Year’s Eve will open with a turkey dinner and all the fixings.
Judge Henry G. Rodgers fixed court terms for Beaverhead Madison and Jefferson counties with start dates in January April July and October at 10 00 a m Sessions begin on listed days and naturalization petitions dates are set for each county in 1941 with specific Wednesdays and Mondays for Beaverhead Madison and Jefferson counties.
Mrs Betty Libuise Stuart wife of John Spear died suddenly Tuesday evening at age 23. Born November 23 1917 in Denver Colorado she is survived by her husband of Dillon and her mother who resides at Casper Wyoming Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
All Dillon churches plan Christmas events during the Yuletide season inviting members and guests to attend. Sunday December 22 features a 9:45 a.m. worship and study period with an offering for foreign fields, and 7:30 p.m. a Christmas celebration with a piano prelud e, call to worship, hymns, scripture, a pantomime Christmas story by students, and high school participants.
Attorney John Collins spoke at the Rotary Club on Monday outlining social security reforms. He urged understanding that benefits favor the poor and old, noting changes to old age pensions and unemployment insurance in 1939 and co‑operation between federal and state agencies. The talk contrasted rugged individualism with state reliance while citing humane and political reasons behind New Deal measures. O. A. Bergeson conducted the meeting with guests present.
Death takes Mrs. Andrew Danielson, 60, at her Dillon home after a four week illness. She was born August 10, 1880 in Holden Utah and moved to Montana twenty years ago. Survived by husband, son James, six daughters, eighteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, sister and two brothers. Funeral details pending.
John William Evans, 67, died at Barrett hospital Tuesday after a lengthy illness aggravated by a hip injury from last summer. Born December 1873 in Boone Indiana, he moved to this region in 1897 and worked on several ranches. He is survived by brothers A T Evans and Joseph T Evans of El Paso Texas. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 AM.
Normal college Bulldogs travel to Rexburg Idaho to avenge a 62 20 defeat from last year. First game ends 49 45 with Aitken 13 points and Aitken Good 10 each. Second game features a 27 point Rickssharpshooter and two Aitkens fouling out. Normal to host Willamette at 7 30 p m with Northwest Conference title history noted.
The Leader's association hosted a Girl Scout and Brownie Christmas party at the training school gym this afternoon. Mrs. Jessie Giudici led arrangements with help from members. carols, gifts, and refreshments were enjoyed. Plans were set for the annual matinee dance for grade school children on January 2.
Mr and Mrs Earl Wheat came back by car from San Pedro California driving their Wheat automobile. They left Butte by plane a week earlier and took four days returning after a snowy Cedar City delay of about a foot of snow.
Tandy Montgomery 21 died when his car left a bridge above the Divide pump station and plunged into the river. Officials say icy road and a sharp curve caused the crash. the body was recovered by a Sheriff’s team two hours after the 3 PM mishap. Montgomery had just completed three months in hayfields near Fishtrap and was en route home.

Funeral services for 80 year old George E. Harby were held at 2:00 p m Tuesday at the Brundage chapel. Harby, an early day pioneer and stage coach driver, died Friday at Barrett hospital after injuries from a bad fall earlier in the week. He was born January 3 1860 in Blackhawk Colorado and moved to Montana with his parents at age two. Survived by son James E. Harby of Battle Creek Michigan daughter Mrs Earl Ryan of Hynes California and sister Mary E Harby of California. Burial followed at Mountain View cemetery. William Goin Bob Medsker and Lorin Flanders of Butte spent the week end in Dillon with relatives and friends.
A blaze caused by a defective flue interrupted the St James guild hall old fashioned dancing event last Saturday. Volunteer firefighters controlled the fire despite near zero temperatures, with smoke and water damage in the basement and first floor. roof damage occurred before containment. A similar incident was noted on April 1 1939.
Martin P. Moe of Helena Kiwanis lieutenant governor elect visited the local Kiwanis club and led a school of instruction. He spoke to Butte Kiwanians and Dillon members while a Butte delegation including Earley Genzberger James Uncles E. H. Strausbarger and Archie Adams participated. Vernon Taylor of Neal College provided violin selections during dinner with Mr Taylor at the piano.
