Montana women push reforms in state commitment laws

Montana women’s clubs and auxiliary groups show strong interest in proposed changes to commitment procedures across state institutions. Fred Bennion outlines plans to require extended psychiatrist observation before court commitment, allow voluntary admissions, and expand care focus at Warm Springs Boulder and Twin Bridges facilities. The proposal also seeks county funding for foster homes and a new child welfare review before institutional commitment, plus emphasis on rehabilitation at Helena and Miles City schools.

Commission of Blind Would Turn Job Over To Board of Welfare

The Montana commission for the blind voted with Lions club representatives to ask the legislature at the January session to transfer the commission’s functions to the state welfare board. A bill would require the welfare department to hire a full time supervisor to manage the work. Gov. Ford’s reorganization committee supported the move. Officials cited small appropriations as the reason the welfare board could better accomplish the goals. The commission originally aided vending counters for blind operators in federal buildings and now runs a summer camp and distributes recorded books, with two vending sites in Billings and Great Falls.
