Officers of Range Group Are Elected

W B Willey Beaverhead National forest supervisor and William Ibenthal of the Beaverhead forest staff attended a Ruby Valley association meeting in Sheridan where officers for the next year were chosen. M J Lott of Twin Bridges was named president with Harley Linder as vice president G D Utley as secretary treasurer and Guy Comfort William Lewis and Alex Peterson named to the board. Range problems and plans for the coming year were discussed. Association members run 24000 head of livestock on their district ranges.

Beaverhead County Selectees Hit January Induction

Six Beaverhead county selectees including two volunteers will depart Dillon for the induction center in Butte. The group, named by J C Fuller, reports Sunday afternoon January 3. Volunteers may still sign up until February 1 for a service branch of choice.

Moquist Recaptured and Back in Jail After Escape

Charles Moquist, who with Calvin Edstrom fled from the county jail on December 12, was recaptured near a Madison county highway by a highway patrolman. He was returned to Virginia City for treatment after three days of exposure. Edstrom was recaptured the following night at the Matt Telin ranch near Twin Bridges after being identified from a radio broadcast.

Service Men Treated By Dillon Residents

Helena Montana fishing and game commission opened all of Lake county and part of Beaverhead county to muskrat trapping during the march 1 to april 15 season after surveys showed the population was not depleted. Beaverhead county was opened except areas drained by the Red Rock river and its tributaries to the overflow of Lima dam. The commission held its second meeting day and planned to adjourn earlier.

Mrs Metlen Claimed By Illness In Dillon

Mrs George R Metlen prominent Dillon matron died Saturday afternoon at 3 40 in a Butte hospital where she had been confined for some time Her late husband a Beaverhead pioneer and former Montana Highway Commission secretary died in Dillon September 19 1941 She resided in Dillon nearly fifty years and was a Mizpah chapter Eastern Star member Surviving are two sons two daughters two sisters a brother and four grandchildren Funeral services were held from the local church.

Dillons community train service launch earns praise

The first Dillons community train service, run during the holiday season, received enthusiastic support from service members as high school girls distributed buddy treats. Captains appointed led distribution, with students and locals contributing candies magazines and small items to ensure no shortage during each stopover. Proceeds from jars in local businesses topped $35 with Orr Flowers leading at $4.62 and The Crystal at $2.25.

The Barnard-Curtis Co. of Minneapolis won the Montana bid for near Dell with a $155,107.87 offer, beating Charles Sorenson and Son of Butte at $174,976.40. Construction is to finish by June 30, 1943, with details withheld as military information.

Beaverhead Cowboy Leo Hughes Dies From Ranching Injuries

Leo Hughes 29 Beaverhead cowhand died at Barrett hospital from injuries after his lariat became snagged last Saturday. He was dragged half a mile at Pierce ranch Horse Prairie section, then beaten by a head impact in a cow camp. Born Ripley Ohio January 1 1912 he had no known relatives. Dillon Native Emmett Schmitt Killed in North Africa

Emmett Schmitt, formerly of Dillon, was killed in action during the North African invasion on November 10. He served with American Army forces and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Schmitt, longtime Spur ranch operators north of Dillon. Friends here mourn his loss in the line of duty.

Conklin Found Dead in Mail Car on Northern Pacific Route

Hobart F. Conklin, a railway mail clerk between Butte and Miles City, was found dead in his mail car on Monday afternoon before the train reached Butte. The coroner attributed death to natural causes. A Dillon native, he had lived in Butte for 12 years and is survived by his wife, three sons, a daughter, and five brothers in various locations.

Beavers Win Brace of Close Week Games

Beaverhead County High School basketball team won two tight games over the weekend. They beat Powell County High 39 to 37 at home and edged Sheridan 28 to 27 in Sheridan. Deputy led scoring with 13 points as others contributed in a hard fought weekender.

Dillon Schools Close for Christmas Vacation

All Dillon schools close for the Christmas break with classes set to resume January 4. The Montana State Normal College and Dillon public schools ended last Friday while Beaverhead County High School held sessions through today. A training school holiday program featured fourth to eighth graders with Ruth Ecklund on organ and Rachel Smith on piano. Normal College will resume January 4, continuing term through vacation. High school students extend three extra days this week to advance spring ranch work.

Car Registration Rules Add Serial Numbers This Year

Cascade County treasurer E. L. Carver says 1943 registrations require serial numbers for all vehicles. Motorists must provide name address occupation mailing and the vehicle’s number and serial number, a step not previously required.
