Montana Mileage Law Upheld Reducing Sheriff Pay
The Montana Supreme Court affirmed a law that sheriffs be paid only actual expenses for mileage when delivering prisoners to state institutions. The ruling overturns Judge Clements and limits mileage fees, citing taxpayer savings and fairness. The decision notes earlier abuses where some sheriffs overcharged by excessive trips and multiple minor transports.
