Downtown Dillon spread Yuletide cheer as city crew and Chamber of Commerce wrapped light posts with ornamental bulbs and placed 60 evergreen bundles along curbs. Merchants finished decorating shops while residents pursued Elks cash prizes for best home displays. The tree crew included Murfin Mikkelson Miller Ovitt Stein Davis and Krukowski and prepared a depot lawn tree. No street streamers were used due to unavailable ties.

Beaverhead County School Census Shows Growth In Pupils
A countywide census of Beaverhead school children, including Dillon, shows 1,307 school aged youngsters this year, up from 1,250 last year. Boys 664 and girls 643 this year, with 711 pupils in District No 10, growing from 671. Thirteen districts report losses, sixteen gains, and one remains the same. The full district census for ages 6 to 21 and under six will be published next week.

Youngster Injured In Car Crash Near River Bridge
Seven year old Harris Wheat was unconscious for hours and given oxygen after a head on crash with a loaded oil truck driven by A L McArthur on the west side of the river bridge. His siblings Gale 7 and Lorraine 2 were treated and released.

Boys State to Be Held Here in 1948

Mother of City Engineer Passes
Mrs. Sidney M Ward a Missoula school teacher and mother of Sam Ward Dillon city engineer died Tuesday after a brief illness at her Missoula home. Born at Fort Missoula she was among Montana State University’s first graduates and one of Missoula’s early teachers. Survived by husband in Helena two other sons Sidney and George of Helena two daughters Elizabeth Borgstede of Helena and Barbara Anne of Missoula and a sister Mrs Wallace Smith. Funeral services were held at Hamilton Friday afternoon. Ward has been treated at the State Veterans Hospital Fort Harrison.

A Dillon Chamber of Commerce delegation led by Parke T. Scott met Missoula forest officials to discuss developing the six mile Horse Prairie road on the Montana side of the Idaho line. Officials noted prior work by Beaverhead county improved sections Armstead to Donovan ranch, leaving Armstead Leadore road as the remaining problem. The three agencies plan a Helena meeting in February 1948 to map forest roads, with the Dillon group ready to present needs.

Rifle Club to Use City Hall Basement
The Dillon Rifle club will use the City Hall basement as a rifle range with safety precautions and lighting installed. Lou Larson presented the request at a city council meeting, and weekly winter shoots are planned. Paddock Tyre received permission to build a quonset storage warehouse on Helena Street. Francis Tonrey urged two additional lights at lanes intersections on the west side.

Bridge dismantling and new construction projects advance

The Future Farmers of America hosted their parents and guests at the annual banquet held Tuesday evening at the high school rec center. About 200 attended with dinner by the home economics department. Clayton Huntley chaired, Dan Scott gave the welcome, Bob Rutledge spoke on aims and accomplishments, and musical numbers featured a high school quartet plus piano and accordion selections by Jim Munday, Dan Scott, and Lester Sage. Thirteen "green hands" were advanced to Future Farmers.

Former Dillon Resident Dies in Oregon
Tra M. Wagner a longtime Dillon resident died December 1 at Baker Oregon. Funeral services were held December 3 in Baker under Baker lodge No 47 A F and A M. Wagner worked on local ranches and later homesteaded in the Blacktail section. He is survived by his widow. The couple left Dillon around 1930 to settle in Oregon.
