All-Time Record Membership Set by Beaverhead Red Cross

Beaverhead county chapter of the American Red Cross reports a record all-time membership for 1938 after an intensive county campaign from Armistice Day to Thanksgiving. Total 879 so far with 610 in Dillon and 269 countywide and expected to exceed 900. top supporters include Ermont mine workers with 100 percent turnout.

Pioneer of Beaverhead Rancher Joseph Butala Sr Dies in California

Joseph Butala Sr a longtime Beaverhead County rancher died last Thursday at his home in St Helena California where he had lived for 15 years. Born in Austria about 65 years ago he came to Beaverhead as a young man and ranching in the Beaverhead valley south of Dillon was his life. He was in poor health for some time and word of his death came from his nephew Joe Rebich of Dillon.

John Collins Speaks on Law at Dillon Club Dinner

Dillon attorney John Collins addressed the weekly Dillon Rotary Club dinner on Law In the Making. He argued law is discovered not made and that laws should reflect existing customs rather than fight them.

Beaverhead River Dams Ordered Out

Beaverhead County commissioners ordered irrigation diversion dams along the Beaverhead river to be removed during winter to prevent ice jams and floods. County Surveyor George Metlen was instructed to inform district ranchers. The board noted recent cold weather forming ice and some ranchers have already removed temporary dams. The Willis Bedell property sale in Dillon was voided and will be reauctioned later.

City Water Show Clean in State Test

City officials report water from the reservoir, a washroom tap at the state normal heating plant, and the Oregon Short Line depot tested exceptionally pure. The state board of health, signed by H. B. Foote, found all three samples negative for B coli, indicating no intestinal bacteria detected despite the filtered treatment.

Dillon Westwoods Win Cage Opener Over Normal Bulldogs 33-27

The Dillon Westwoods defeated Montana State Normal's Bull dogs 33 to 27 in the season opener. New rules removing the center jump after scores were noted as speeding play. Kastelitz starred for Normal, while the Westwoods used their height for rebounds and aerial plays, with the score tied eight times.

Mary J Rodgers Leads Rebekah Lodge in Melrose

Beav erhead county graduate Mary J Rodgers heads the Riverside Rebekah Lodge chapter in Melrose as noble grand. Officers elected at the Diana Rebekah lodge meeting include Martha Quackenbush and Hazel Conger with plans for a January installation and a December 16 Christmas party. Three candidates were initiated.

Father F X Lechner led a Dillon Elks lodge memorial at the training school auditorium. Exalted Ruler L Ott Gordon opened the ritual as officers participated. Vocal solos by Hugo Kenk Margaret McMahon and Mrs Kenneth Wheat plus the Elks chorus under Father Lechner featured the evening.

Sportsmen Seek Staggered Open Duck Season in Montana

Beaverhead Sportsmen's association leaders press for a staggered duck season for Montana next year. Two meetings, one in Twin Bridges and one in Butte, will seek changes and will forward recommendations to the state game warden for the U S biological survey chief in Idaho next week.

Sheridan man shoots perfect 50 in Dillon Club event

Nick Birrer of Sheridan hit a perfect 50 in the 16 yard singles to win the Dillon Gun Club practice trap at the Country Club traps. Pete and Vic Westergard tied for second with 47, followed by Morrison 46 and other shooters ranging from 44 to 11 in the 50 target and 25 target handicap events.

Burglaries Reported in Lima Area Loot Stolen From Beer Parlor

Burglaries in Lima were staged with over $70 in cash taken from a trunk at the beer parlor run by George Mihelich Friday night. An earlier Thursday attempt at Leo Truax's Lima garage failed, leaving suspects foiled in that burglary.

Retail merchants meet in Dillon to set Christmas week hours and observed holidays. Stores including apparel jewelry hardware and furniture would stay open to 8 pm on Tue Wed and Thu before Christmas and close Friday at 6 pm. Protest Over Silver Price By Last Chance Gulch Group

Leaders of the Last Chance Gulch Mining association vote to oppose any cut in the domestic silver price. A protest to Montana's congressional delegation in Washington urges maintaining or raising the price of 77.57 cents per fine ounce, noting Montana silver is a major mineral export with copper, lead, zinc and gold by products.

Meetings of Beaverhead Ranchers Set Next Week

County Agent Bernard Williams announced a series of Beaverhead county agricultural conservation committee meetings to be held next week. The schedule includes Wisdom on Monday December 13 at 2 p.m., Dell on Tuesday December 14, Dillon on Wednesday December 15 in the afternoon, and Reichle on Wednesday December 15 in the evening. The county committee plans a Bozeman meeting December 8 9 to discuss plans for the coming year. Jack Keenan chairs the county committee and Dillon group. Jens Bay and Luther Smith are members. Joseph Ferguson heads the Reichle group.

Normal College's Gargoyles dramatics club presents three plays at the college auditorium Friday night December 10. Harold Hubbard of this city was tried by jury in justice court Monday afternoon. Judge George Opp presided. Hubbard was found guilty and fined 50 dollars, now serving the sentence in county jail for nonpayment.
