Dillon Elks Memorial Services Sunday

Edward C. Smith 77 a Beaverhead county resident for 71 years died Saturday at his Dillon home after years of ill health. Born August 7, 1860 in Yreka California he came to Montana in 1866 with his parents and a Poindexter Orr cattle drive. He married Rosa Ripley in 1889 in Newcomerstown Ohio and lived on a Dillon area ranch in the livestock business for decades.

Spunky a beloved mongrel dog of Lloyd Davis was killed by poison left in meat in city yards. Four other pets died from the same poison bite as the culprit stalked at night, harming loyal dogs tied to young owners.

Musicians of College at Rotary Meet

Montana State Normal college students performed at the Dilllon Rotary Club dinner. Frances McPhail gave an accordion solo, Janet Smith sang, Louise Davison accompanied, and a cornet duet was played by L A Gregory and Elizabeth Wilkinson. Earl Fairbanks Jr spoke on the Beaver. Principal Conrad Orr presided, and Dr R D Curry announced a PTA father and son banquet for Tuesday night.

Thanksgiving Observed Quietly Across Beaverhead County

Beaverhead County marked Thanksgiving with union services at Grace Methodist and St James Episcopal and offerings for Barrett hospital. The Methodist and Lutheran churches held programs, schools closed Thursday and Friday, and communities hosted family gatherings and dances at city venues and across the county.

Seniors Win Beaverhead High Interclass Tournament Gold

Beaverhead county high school crowned the senior Class A basketball champions with a 40-34 win over juniors after a 15 point handicap. The senior B team topped juniors 25-12 to sweep the boys division, while girls’ game ended 12-12 as seniors trailed by 6.

Gift Shop to Open by Normal College Art Club

The art club of the Normal college will open its Gift Shop on December 1 in the art club room and college art rooms. Items include wooden rings bracelets and novelty boxes with hand painted designs. Plans include an exhibit of Japanese prints and an assembly program featuring choral and orchestral performances directed by Arnold Clair and Ralph McFadden.

Negro Held After Beating Charge in Cabbage Patch Affray

Beaverthead county jail holds Guy Abernathy a colored porter on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon in a Saturday night affray. Paul Buchal, who allegedly shot Abernathy through both feet with a 410 shotgun, was released on own recognizance. Sheriff Paul H. Temple said evidence showed Abernathy had harassed a black neighbor who sought refuge in Buchali’s cabin. Abernathy reportedly fired a rifle at Buchali missing him. Buchali then fired at Abernathy’s feet. pellets punctured shoes and trousers. Hospital said wounds not serious and would dismiss him today. Temple said Abernathy would be taken into custody on a charge.

Charity Hall Dinner Offers Food Donations for Dillon Elks

The Dillon Elks lodge invites admission on Saturday December 11 by donating food items for a children's lunch program at the training school. Any single 25 cent donation can be credited, with items including onions pork and beans canned peas canned tomatoes canned corn canned milk baked beans sugar cocoa jello beef carrots and canned soups listed.

State Board Takes Action Duck Season

The Montana state fish and game commission pledges cooperation with Beaverhead Sportsmen's Association to pursue a staggered duck season next year. Chief Deputy J W Carney replies to association president L B Phillips thanking them for the recommendation and promising to do everything within their power to persuade federal authorities to change the setup.

Chairman Mrs. F. D. Willis announces booths at First National Bank State Bank and Trust post office for the next two Saturdays. Beaverhead county residents who have not received or purchased seals are urged to visit. The sales proceeds largely benefit Beaverhead county.

Father Lechner to Speak at Dillon Elks Memorial Rites

The Rev. Father F. X. Lechner will deliver the principal address at the Dillon Elks lodge annual memorial services Sunday at 7 p.m. in the training school auditorium. The public is invited and the program, about one hour, includes processional, recessional, piano solos by Ralph McFadden, and opening ceremonies by Exalted Ruler L. Ott Gordon and Esquire.

CCC Youths Charged with Disturbance and Knife Threat

Two Birch Creek youths Ches ter Bowling and Willie Hayes were arrested after allegedly pulling a knife on Undersheriff John Troupe on Bannack street during a disturbance. Troupe was unharmed as his coat was slashed. A third companion Hir shel Blanton was jailed for drunk and disorderly conduct. The trio faced arraignment today.

Mrs. Melton Claimed by Illness in Dillon

Mrs. Anna F. Melton, wife of James O. Melton and a respected Dillon matron, died at her home after a heart attack followed by pneumonia. Born March 21 1888 in Montpelier Idaho she was the daughter of John and Baker. Her father John Baker served Beaverhead county clerk and recorder for 30 years.

Cars Crash Near Dewey Involving Melrose And Butte Drivers

Cars driven by Pete Piazzola of Melrose and Stanley Thompson of Butte were damaged in a collision near Dewey last Wednesday. Passengers included Piazzola family members. all occupants escaped with minor injuries. State Patrolman Rupert Wright and Undersheriff John Troupe investigated and announced summons for Arnold Hansen of Preston Idaho for unlicensed truck operation and actions by three local drivers for traffic violations.

Cub Scouts and Parents Banquet in Dillon

Over 80 people attended a Dillon Cub Scouts banquet at the training school Monday night. Rev. W. J. Loar led the event and received a valuable book from Percy Frazier. Mrs. Ben Davis also received a book, and den chiefs Billy Curry George Bowring and J. W. McCracken earned awards along with Jack Davis and J. W. McCracken. Merit awards went to Bobby Jackson Dee Smith Billy Curry Russell Brown and Charles Davis. Mrs. W. W. Hawkins led the program with help from Mrs. W. D. Ross and Mrs. T. Lee McCracken.

Old Time Beaverhead Resident Dies at County Farm

William Brennan a Beaverhead county resident since 1898 died last night at the county farm. Born January 24 1868 in Clinton Illinois he came to Montana forty years ago and worked on several county ranches including the Roscoe Cornell ranch for many years. He had two brothers in the East.
