Delay In Filing For Disability Benefits May Prove Costly
John Reed of the Butte social security office warns that delaying an application for disability benefits can be costly. Applications filed in 1957 retroactively cover July 1957 if the worker is at least 50, fully and permanently disabled, and worked enough to qualify. After this year payments start only from the month of filing. Eligibility requires 20 of 40 quarters before disability and 6 of 13 quarters before onset, plus full insured status. A seriously disabled person 50 or older qualifies. younger applicants may freeze social security rights. Freeze actions require six months of disability, with Reed visiting Dillon on December 12 and 26 at the Employment Service office from 1 to 4 pm.
