In Washington the debate over federal aid to education resurfaces as Sputnik is used to argue for expanded funding. Opponents say states and locals can handle school construction and scientific education without federal intrusion. Industry backs a quick expansion in funding as a strategic move.
Dr. R L Garff told the Idaho Woolgrowers Association in Boise that Americas real value lies in the system that produces wealth. He warned against foreign made goods and urged Americans to support domestic industry and stay ahead in knowledge. The column traces historical speed milestones from ten miles per hour to a hundred miles an hour, noting rapid progress in the last decade.
Mrs. Ada Dieterle 56 and her 14 year old son William died in a collision on U S 91 near Roberts Idaho. The earth mover driven by Don Turner struck the Dieterle sedan as the four were returning from Idaho Falls. Father Lewis Dieterle Lina and Linda were hospitalized with injuries. An inquest will be held. Funeral services for Ada and William were postponed to Friday at the Dillon L D S church with graveside rites in Mountain View Cemetery.
Jackson residents credit the fast response of the Jackson Fire Department after a trailer home owned by Fred Bowen caught fire on a Friday night. Bowen awoke to smoke and escaped through a window as wind fanned the flames. The trailer was a total loss, endangering nearby buildings.
Robert Smith Quackenbush 88 longtime Dillon resident died Monday and his funeral was held at 10 30 this morning at Brun dage Chapel with Rev Z A Jumper of the Methodist church officiating Burial followed in Mountain View cemetery Quackenbush was born August 3 1869 at Black River Falls Wisconsin He moved to San Diego at 16 and later worked on west coast then went to Butte in 1893 where he was a timber contractor for mines Continued on Pages 8.
Judge W. W. Lessley of the 18th Judicial District is the principal speaker at the Beaverhead County unit of the Montana Education Association dinner tonight at Lee’s Steak House. He will discuss teaching and school problems as they relate to teenagers with the topic This Is Our Task. About sixty local teachers are expected to attend, announced Dr. John Cumming, MEA president.
Beaverhead county subscribers contributed 1410 to the Christmas Seal Sale last weekend. Chairman John C. Garry says the fund remains about 400 short of the goal and reminders have been sent to nonrespondents to support the tuberculosis battle.
The Hospital Auxiliary completed plans for the second annual Silver Tea for Barrett Hospital. The event runs Friday 2 to 5 pm at Lee's Steak House, with new Auxiliary memberships welcomed and home made candy for sale. Louise McLaren elected president succeeding Mrs. Puyear. other officers named. A blood drawing from Beaverhead county donors is set for Tuesday Dec 17 at the Elks Club 1 to 4 pm with Auxiliary volunteers assisting.
Dillon Jaycees sponsor a residential Christmas lighting contest running from December 9 to December 26. Kenneth Morrison chairs the contest with prizes at local level and a chance for the top entry to enter a nationwide contest with a $5000 prize. Entry forms are available at Tovey Insurance Agency and local electric supply stores.
Dillon Jayceens schedule a Christmas party at the Legion Hall on Friday December 20 with Santa Claus and treats. They aim to buy a television set for Barrett Hospital pediatrics ward, plus movable lead-ins for other rooms, funded by a $90 profit from Christmas card sales by Margie Gleed.
At a regular meeting the BCHS Board of Trustees adopted a policy resolution governing the student teacher cooperative program with Western College. The board authorized the high school principal to oversee all arrangements and affirmed its obligation to provide high quality education to students and patrons. Continued on Page 4.
Funeral services for 82 year old Mrs. Fredricka Cushing will be held Thursday at 2 pm at the First Baptist Church with Rev. George Stepan officiating. Interment is in Mountain View cemetery. Mrs. Cushing died Saturday in Fresno where she wintered for years. Her daughter Mrs. Wallace Ogden of Fresno has arrived in Dillon and stays with cousin Mrs. M B Pyeatt. She was born Sept 28 1875 in Ohio and resided in Dillon for 73 years.
The 1958 fundraising drive in Dillon aims to raise 1735.00 for local Girl Scout activities. Mrs. Wendell Poundstone said letters are being mailed to parents, with the Council pledging all funds stay local and cover items from furnace taxes to camp supplies and leader training.
Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a full page ad in the February National Educational Association Journal promoting Western Montana College. The effort aims to lift summer school attendance and boost Beaverhead region recreation and teaching opportunities. The Advance Western committee led by Dr. Hobert English will meet December 21 to coordinate Chamber and college faculty efforts.
The fourth of ten wildlife forums to be held in the district courtroom at the courthouse on December 18 features Les Pengelly of Montana State University and County Agent Ed Atkins. The discussion covers Game Management Practices Past and Present with predator control as a tool, plus regulations stocking refuges and habitat impacts.
Contributions are still needed for the fund to purchase television sets for patients at Rest Homes planned for installation by Dillon Soroptimists. The meeting also featured a Christmas progressive dinner with hostesses listed and guests including Mrs. Don Pace of Beagerhead Ambulance Board, sponsor of the 1954 ambulance purchase.
The week ending Tuesday afternoon showed gusty winds and no notable precipitation at the Western Montana College weather station in Dillon. Readings ranged from 8 above on Wednesday morning to a high of 60 on December 9, with an average weekly temperature around 46 and total precipitation not recorded.
