Armstead Boy Drowns in Beaverhead River Tragedy

Charles Gravely, 13, of Armstead, drowned Wednesday afternoon while raft riding with Allan Bradley. Rescue attempts failed after he disappeared at a deep pool near Clark's canyon. Dr. Routledge of Dillon could not revive him after three hours of effort.

Dillon Labor Day celebration set for Sunday and Monday

Illons biggest community event of the year draws the Dillon volunteer fire department Labor Day celebration with free street dancing Monday night and a rock drilling contest plus a bathing beauty contest and more than $1,000 in prizes. Beav erhead and Madison counties provide rodeo stock as entries pour in from nearby cities. The two day program runs from morning to early morning with trapshoot starting at 8 30 each day and large turnouts expected from across the region.

Rodeo and Carnival Schedule for Meaderville Event Day

The program lists events from 8:30 a.m. trapshoot to 8:30 p.m. street carnival with rodeo at 1:30 p.m. featuring broncho busting bareback riding bulldogging steer riding pig race and acts by Harry Shuler Floyd DeLong Al Johnson and Jack Blackmore. Evening events include tug of war fire hose battle greased pig catches greased pole pie eating and street dancing with a bathing beauty contest. Sunday adds free barbecue slow race walk trot run and more during rodeo with two divisions for bathing beauty.

FIHD Renfro of the Dillon Gun club tied the 190 score and set a 190x200 exhibition but lost the Grand American doubles title to O C Bottger of Fairfield Iowa by one target as wind disrupted the second hundred targets. Mark Arie of Champaign Illinois earned high over all honors.

Frank Eliel, prominent Dillon merchant, spoke to the Dillon Rotary Club Monday night recounting his several months abroad in Europe. Harold Warner chaired. Eliel, while not claiming expertise on current European conditions, offered impressions as a keen observer.

Beaverhead public and high schools to open next Tuesday

Beaverhead county public and Bea verhead county high school and most county schools will start term next Tuesday morning ending vacation for hundreds of students. The Montana State Normal College opens Sept 26. Preparations are complete though not all instructors have arrived. no new faculty. At the high school Coach Brick Breeden will call for football candidates as a strong sports year is anticipated and a large eighth grade graduation enrollment is expected from the county.

Forest Fire in Madison Becomes Under Control

The Black Butte fire in the Madison reserve, the Beaverhead National Forest's most serious blaze this season, was fully extinguished by week’s end after 38 fire fighters worked with rain aid. It burned 75 acres before control, with 20 crews released on Thursday and the rest kept for a day or two.

Small Dillon Boy Hurt in Accident

A 9 year old Dillon boy, son of Mr and Mrs John Kosowski, fractured his leg Saturday night after being struck by a car driven by Harvey Sorenson at Helena and Idaho streets. The boy grabbed the bumper and rode for half a block before being freed. Other weekend crashes included collisions near the Paul Henneberry tourist camp and on roads to Elkhorn Springs.

Dillon Man H D Mayfield Dies After Brief Illness

Arm an D Mayfield a Dillon resident since 1904 died at his home Saturday night after a brief illness. Born March 10, 1869 in Longmont Colorado he came to Beaverhead County 28 years ago locating in Dillon. He founded the Dillon Carriage Works and ran a Dillon blacksmith shop, with time on a homestead near Armstead. Funeral services were held yesterday at Grace Methodist Episcopal Church.

Lutherans to Build New Church Home in Dillon

Dillon Lutherans began constructing a church home on North Pacific Street near Beaverhead County High School on former Ripley property. The 30 by 44 foot cottage style building will feature log appearance exterior and attractively finished interior, marking the first church home for the congregation after years meeting in St. Rose hall.

Beaverhead wool topped the state market for 1932 with the Henry Thompson estate clip at Dell selling 80,000 pounds to Eiseman and Company of Boston. Dillon representative George M. Melton reported the 11 1 4 cents price highest in state to date, reflecting growing strength in wool values.
