Prominent Beavershead Matron Summoned After Passing

Mrs Eudora D Weenink longtime Beaverhead County resident died last Friday at her home. She was a respected community figure and widow of the late John Weenink. Survived by several children and many relatives, services will be held at the family church with burial to follow in the county cemetery.

Mrs. Eudora Delene Wennink of South Pacific street Beaverhead died Sunday afternoon after a several weeks illness due to heart trouble and complications. She was born May 26, 1866 in New Castle Wisconsin and moved to Dion in 1887 with her husband, living in the community for more than 45 years.

Improvements at Dillon Bank and Trust Completed

Improvements completed at Dillon Bank and Trust include freshly painted walls and ceilings in a light color to brighten rear rooms and hallways. New burglarproof steel vault doors were installed, marking the bank as a modern, attractive financial institution in the state after weeks of refinishing and remodeling.

Registration for General Election Closes in Beaverhead County

Beaverhead county registration for the general election ends at 5 PM Friday September 23. Electors may register at the county clerk’s office or with deputy registrars outside Dillon within ten miles. Those who voted in the last general election but did not register must do so if not already registered. Over sixty new names added since July 19 primary. total expected to top 4,000 by close.

Saddles Stolen From Two Ranches Last Week

Sheriff W. C. Orr investigated thefts of two saddles last Wednesday evening, one from a Bedrock ranch and another from the Chris Peterson ranch at Dell. No clues were found. the thief is believed to have traveled by car and stopped at ranches.

Fire at Moose Café Caused by Boiling Grease

Fire department was called early Thursday to extinguish a blaze in the Moose café kitchen on Montana street. A pan of hot grease boiled over, causing the fire with little damage reported.

Mrs. Elizabeth Luebben was elected associate grand conductress at the closing sessions of the Order of Eastern Star grand chapter in Helena last week. Delegates from Dillon included Mrs. Nellie Lovell Mrs. Fratie Stone Mr. Jardine Rife and H. G. Rodgers. Dillon prepares for a two day rodeo and carnival by the volunteer fire department on Sept 4 and 5 with trap shoots and an active program planned through the event.

School bells to ring again in September

Countywide report by Miss Gladys Garr shows 42 districts have cash on hand totaling 11987.88 and 8118.56 received from state funds. Beaverhead County High School opens September 6 with improvements including ceilings paneling and wiring. Heating upgrade contracts to cut annual costs by 700 to 1000 dollars. No resignations among last year’s teachers. nine period schedule planned.

Democrats Organize at Beaverhead Meeting Saturday

A Beaverhead county Democratic central committee was formed at an Andrus hotel gathering with about 75 attendees including nearly all fall candidates. Harry J. Andrus was chosen county chairman, F M Poindexter re elected state committeeman, Robert Barrett re elected treasurer, and a secretary and advisory committee to be appointed. George M. Melton led the meeting. Leon Truax of Lima was elected temporary secretary.

Migratory Birds Hunting Season Opens in Montana

The Montana migratory birds season begins October 1 and ends November 30. The state game department received guidance from the U S biological survey confirming federal hunting laws. Shooting is allowed from a half hour before sunrise until sunset on all days within the period.

Embers of the Dillon Rotary club heard a first hand account of the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Four Dillon youths drove to California in a vintage car, with Dr. R. D. Curry making the trip by auto. Chester Melton described the journey and car troubles with humor.

Harvest dances planned at Dillmont park by Baxter Tonney

The Baxter Tonney orchestra, Dillon's oldest and popular dance group, will headline three harvest dances at Dillmont park on September 3, 4 and 5. A Labor Day closing event is expected to draw crowds from out of town with nightly spot dances and free prize distributions. The orchestra expands to seven pieces for the occasion.

Lutherans from Beaverhead and Madison counties gathered at Dillmont Park for a church picnic. The 11 am program opened with a sermon by Rev. O. A. Schmidt on Christian Spirit, with Miss Anna Anderson as soloist. At noon families shared a picnic lunch under the trees.

Bannack Team Loses To Colored House Of David Nine

In a fast paced fair grounds game last Friday Bannack’s Mining nine fell 14 to 16 to the Colored House of David. The visitors toured the northwest and had defeated Dillon two weeks earlier by a smaller margin. Local fans praised the colored squad’s uncanny ball handling. Dillon later lost Sunday to Anaconda 9 to 5, while several Bannack players were absent due to a firemen’s convention in Billings.

Fifty Men Fight Forest Blaze in Madison Section

A major forest fire on the Gravely range east of Black Butte spread rapidly last Monday afternoon. Thirty more men were drafted Tuesday to reinforce about twenty already on scene. Officials fear the blaze, likely man caused, may burn an undetermined amount of timber and grazing land along Wolverine creek in the Madison forest.

Aged Prospector Pleads Guilty in Forest Fire Case

Morgan Jones an 84 year old prospector from Moosehorn Creek pleaded guilty in justice court before Judge George Opp to causing a forest fire while burning logs to uncover placer ground. He was fined $26 with the penalty remitted. Six Wisdom dispatches fought the fire which burned about three acres in Beaverhead reserve. Jones, a longtime resident, has aided the forestry department and expressed regret.

Four Dillon Girls Attend Rainbow Assembly Delegates

Dillon sends four delegates to the Missoula convention of the Order of Rainbow for Girls. Miss Betty Roe serves on the program committee while Georgianna Crouse Ebba Anderson and Catherine Bates participate as delegates. They departed Monday morning with Mr and Mrs John T Orr driving.

Odd Fellows to Initiate Class in Wisdom

A large Dillon group will motor to Wisdom Saturday for Jackson lodge initiation conducted by the Fidelity degree staff of Butte, state champions, led by Captain W H Goodland. Wisdom lodge plans entertainment. Sunday the annual Odd Fellows picnic will be at Jackson with many attendees staying in the Big Hole region.

Governor Erickson Proclaims Montana General Election

The governor issues the general election proclamation for Montana set for Tuesday, November 8. Voters will elect four presidential electors two U S representatives two associate justices governor lieutenant governor secretary of state state treasurer state auditor superintendent of public instruction one railroad and public service commissioner state senators from 29 counties state house members from all counties and district court judges. Ravalli county remains in the Fourth judicial district with two judges elected this year instead of three.

Suspects Held for Dell Hotel Holdup Are Turned Loose

Dell hotel hold up suspects D W Ralph Leland Hall and James O Brien released after sheriff Orr found no evidence connecting them to the Elliot hotel robbery. Though two resembled the bandits they were ruled not involved.
