Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce and Rodeo Association plan a Saturday afternoon program with contests for all ages. Events include bicycle races, 50 yard dashes, greased pig and chicken catches, tug of war, greased pole, sack and three legged races, shoe and tricycle races, peanut race and more. Prizes total 100 dollars.
Sen George M Gosman state GOP chair and Mrs Gosman with daughter Dorothy Ann visited Helena for the weekend executive meeting Victory conferences and entertainment Sunday and Monday. Also attending were O A Bergeson Mrs Fred Hirschy Wisdom county committeewoman and Edwin Whitworth with his county central committee role. Gosman later left for New York City to attend the National American Legion convention August 28 31.
John Kent longtime Beaverhead county resident died early Thursday at the MacDonald Rest Home in Alder after a period of declining health. Born May 10 1868 in Diamond City he helped develop Dillon area bridges and buildings before retirement. Surviving relatives include a daughter in law and son in Dillon and Philipsburg and several siblings and grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday at Brundage Chapel with Rev. Omer Idso officiating and burial at Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers were W J Cushing Ernest Dubie George Lenox F C McFadden Herbert Wheat and George Dart.
S. L. Williams, 57, Union Pacific freight conductor, collapsed at Apex switch yards from a heart attack likely tied to overexertion. Engineer found him unconscious after dropping his lantern. Body sent to Brundage chapel. remains to be buried in Ogden, Utah after funeral in Pocatello. no inquest.
A. L. McArthur and Frank Madden represented the local Kiwanis club at the 27th annual Montana Kiwanis district convention in Missoula August 24 to 26. Lieutenant governor O. K. Moe attended as delegate at large with Mrs. Moe. Over 20 clubs in the district sent delegates to the meeting. President Leonard Schulz noted the attendance.
Beaverhead county commissioners meet in regular session Aug 4 1947 with Commissioners Hirschy Scott Stahl and Clerk Buckingham present The agenda includes prior meeting minutes approval and a budget session plus the upcoming regular meeting and final budget on Aug 6 1947 Chief Forester Lyle F Watts visits Beaverhead area touring Beaverhead National Forest with local officials and observers including P D Hanson Carles L Tebbe and Tom Van Peter en route to Ennis from Dillon via Butte and Wise River.

Prizes for best outfitted under 12 are a red leather cowgirl suit for a girl and a tan fringed suit for a boy, donated by Johnson Harness shop. The procession runs from Poindexter to Glendale then west to Idaho then north to Helena then west to Montana and south to Beaverhead Lumber Co for dispersal. Parade officials ask motorists to avoid Pacific and Washington streets during assembly from 10 30 a m to 12 noon to prevent confusion.
Beaverhead county hosts a Labor Day parade climaxing the Go Western Week. The all county grand parade starts at noon September 1 from the south end of Pacific Street and winds through Dillon districts. Prizes total about $1000 across 17 sections plus special outfits for best costumed cowgirl and cowboy under 12.
Mrs Albertha Goyer 74 longtime Montana resident since 1890 died Saturday morning at Barrett hospital after a lingering illness. Born Rock Port Missouri March 12 1873 she moved to Montana in 1890 and married Napoleon Goyer in 1895. They lived in mining towns before ranching on the Grasshopper. Survived by son Frank and his wife Earl Goyer and two grandchildren of Billings a brother Frank Drake of Texas two sisters Daisy Douglas of Kansas and Edith Pough of Colorado. Funeral Monday at Brundage chapel with Rev Belle Long officiating. Burial at Mountain View cemetery. Pallbearers were Ross Nay Louis Hoffman George Gullikson Frank Gorman Guy Gray and Hans Dois.
The Reverend Ed Ferguson of Corvallis Community Church and International Youth for Christ will speak at a Saturday Aug 30 rally at 7:30 PM in the Dillon high school auditorium. Walter Daggett leads the Dillon youths with guests from Anaconda Deer Lodge and Butte attending. program is undenominational and open to the public.
The annual Dillon Rodeo in southwestern Montana launches next Sunday for a two day event expected to be the region's biggest outdoor show. Jakie Johnson brings Perma stock including broncs bulls and Brahmas such as Ger onimo and Black Panther to the fairgrounds for a thrilling spectacle. Herman Peterson supplies calf roping and bulldogging stock to join the program.
Schools in Dillon and Beaverhead County begin September 2 with grade schools opening countywide except Dillon public schools which start September 8. Beaverhead County High School notes rising registrations with 200 enrolled and more anticipated. Regular classes start at 9 a m with 30 minute morning periods and an afternoon assembly for freshmen followed by class meetings and elections. Football gear issues begin after meetings and new students are urged to register this week.
A $750 prize is offered for the best all around cowboy funded by local businesses including The Club Royal run by Rafe Ingersoll Oscar Clark of Ennis and the Kaiser-Fraser Agency with Frank O Keefe among contributors Crystal Club Jim Campbell Pressec Tom Pierce Montana Auto Sales Joe White and others.
Lloyd Whipple post 4163 VFW held a meeting to plan a county wide picnic with Lima Jackson and Dillon posts. The event is scheduled for September 14 at Elkhorn Springs. Helena officials John Bonner John Tomcheck and Bill Pilgeram plan to attend. Barbecued beef sandwiches will be served during the Dillon rodeo.
Laurence Dana jailed to await preliminary hearing next Monday in district court before Judge Lyman H. Bennett on forgery charges. Dana was paroled from the state prison last Saturday. Francis L. Williams, picked up August 18 on forgery charges, received a two year sentence from Judge Bennett and was taken to Deer Lodge that afternoon by Undersheriff Boyd Quick.
Last rites for Joseph P. Nolan aged 74 were performed Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Rose Catholic Church with Rev. Timothy Clifford presiding. Burial followed in Mountain View cemetery. Mr. Nolan died Monday after months of ill health.
Merchants in Dillon staged two window displays Monday and Tuesday drawing attention from visitors. Winn’s and the Electric and Variety Store showcase items themed Hob sby Lane and local relics from Montana and Beaverhead county. The Beaverhead County Museum sponsors the Electric & Variety display with items over a century old, including an ox-yoke and a hand wrought pipe.
