New Deposits of Iron Ore Found in Montana Reservation
In 1912 Eugene Stebinger of the US Geological Survey identified magnetic beds with about 38 percent iron on the Blackfeet Reservation in northwestern Montana. The beds span a sandstone formation across the reservation, especially along the South Fork of Milk River, with towns like Cut Banks and Browning nearby. Analysis shows iron around 27.3 percent and titanium oxide about 8.3 percent, with higher titanium making smelting difficult though future tech may adapt. A second note mentions magnetite bearing sandstone cliffs and potential tonnage for hand sorting, but overall ore would average 50 percent iron, with titanium oxide often exceeding 12 percent. A report copy is available from the Director of the US Geological Survey.
