Hundreds Attend Sacajawea Picnic Two Day Celebration Planned

Two day Sacajawea picnic and Dillon’s big fall celebration near completion with an elaborate program on Sept. 4 and 5. A free attraction filled schedule includes horse racing, tug of war, fire hose battles, rock drilling, bathing beauty contest, baseball games, street dancing, trapshoot, and a mile a minute program. Secretaries report inquiries from distant Dakotas and strong turnout hoped from Butte Anaconda and Madison County.

Gas thieves drain 1000 gallons from city storage tank

The No 1 Standard Oil tank in the south end shows a break in the pumping house and a stolen 1000 gallons of gasoline. Police found fingerprints and suspect two tank trucks were used. The fuel may have been diverted to a local service station, possibly in Butte.

Monument Dedicated At Steasawea National Monument

Last Sunday Montana and Idaho residents gathered at Lemhi Pass to dedicate Steasawea National Monument a new federally established recreational area honoring the Indian woman who guided the Lewis and Clark expedition Archdeacon Nash dedicated the monument Scouts unfurled the flag and Rh F Hammatt assistant regional forester presented the area to the public on behalf of the government Mrs J W Scott of Armstead accepted the monument and speakers praised her efforts for designating the site as a national monument

High School Agriculture Students Keeping Busy

Beaverhead county high school students in summer project work under Supervisor Bernard Williams show up-to-date records and accurate cost reports. The agricultural program next fall will include animal husbandry, shop work, irrigation, farm mechanics, ranch accounting and practical tasks across beef, sheep, swine, potatoes and poultry departments.

Doctor Williams Weds Eleanor Walsh in Las Vegas

Mrs A L Anderson of this city announces the marriage of her son Dr Lee C Williams of Los Angeles to Miss Eleanor Walsh of Los Angeles in Las Vegas Nevada on May 9. The ceremony was at the Methodist parsonage with Rev Reynolds officiating. The bride is daughter of Mr and Mrs D J Walsh of Lead SD and has served as surgical supervisor at Los Angeles General Hospital while Dr Williams is chief anesthetist. The couple, former Beaverhead County high school graduate and prominent local youth, are vacationing in Prescott Arizona.

Lutheran Festival to Be Held at Dillon Park

The Dillon Lutheran church sponsors a festival at Dillon Park next Sunday with speakers including Lieutenant Governor Frank A. Hazelbaker and attorney T. J. Davis. Services start at 11 AM followed by a picnic. program resumes at 2:30 PM in the large pavilion, with coffee from a park stand.

Summer Term of Normal College Closes

The summer term of the Montana State Normal College ended last Friday as students headed home across the state. Six weeks remain before the fall term begins Monday September 26. Many faculty members are taking the vacation period, the only break aside from winter holidays, with several leaving over the weekend for other points.

Armstead Monida Highway Contract Awarded to Minneapolis Firm

The Minnesota company OLA BROTHERS won the Armstead Monida highway oiling contract at Helena for plant mix oil treated crushed gravel on 45 751 miles. The bid totaled 133 899 39 dollars the lowest among several bids. Work starts after equipment arrives and will run six hours a day five days a week. Beverages unclear.

Tennis Tournament Planned for Dillon This Month

Plans for a tennis tournament to be held in Dillon later this month were discussed at a meeting at St. James guild hall Saturday evening. The event will feature men's and women's singles doubles and mixed doubles. Players wishing to enter should notify Billy Boone.

County land sold for taxes in Beaverhead County

Beaverhead County commissioners met in special session on August 10 1932 to sell land acquired by tax deed and the B A Smith property for old age pension. Bids were frank Ritschel 576 and Luther S Smith 720 with both lots struck off at 90 percent of appraised value. Continued on page 4.

Hebard Speaks on Sacajawea at Dillon Rotary

Dr Grace Raymond Hebard of the University of Wyoming spoke at the Dillon Rotary dinner on Sacajawea the Boat Woman guide of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The talk covered Sacajawea's life and her role aiding the explorers while a memorial dedication at Lemhi Pass was held last Sunday. Mrs J W Scott praised the monument builders and the dedication exercises. Thomas Fe Luebben chaired the meeting.

Suspects in Dell HoldUp Nabbed Here

Undersheriff W J Barry and Chief Charles Nelson arrested suspects in the Dell hotel holdup two weeks earlier and the proprietor assault. Hall brothers from Idaho and others await identification as Anaconda men are questioned to confirm the two bandits.

Centennial matron dies at her Centennial valley ranch

J A Jones aged 80 longtime Centennial valley resident died last Wednesday at her ranch after a lingering illness Born March 29 1852 in Indiana she came to the valley 39 years ago and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Surviving are her husband three sons five daughters and numerous grandchildren Funeral services were held Saturday at the ranch with Rev H N Tragitt of St James Episcopal church officiating and interment in the Jones cemetery

Hazelbaker Guest at State Conventions

Lieut. Gov. Frank A. Hazelbaker and Mrs. Hazelbaker spent a week touring central and eastern Montana attending two state conventions. They registered for the Elks state convention in Lewistown and next day moved to Forsyth where the Republican gubernatorial nominee spoke at the Montana Press Association convention. A Lewistown reception Thursday evening honored Lieut. Gov. Hazelbaker, Congressman Scott Leavitt and Steve Arnold, Republican nominee for lieutenant governor.

Double Header Baseball Feature At Butte Last Sunday

Baseball fans saw a twin bill as Dillon defeated Butte O'Brien Truckers 7 to 5 in game one with Vandegrift and Davis as batteries. The I B Mining company team then lost 9 to 7 to Broadway Garage of Butte in the nightcap. Bannack faces the House of David nine in town Friday night.
