340 Boys State Delegates Attend 1957 Session

340 selected high school juniors attend the 11th annual Montana Boys State session on the Western Montana College campus. Delegates form political parties Frontier and Pioneer, undertake government study, and tour Virginia City in a Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce trip. Beaverhead County Livestock Values Drop in 1957 Rolls

Beaverhead county 1957 property rolls show total assessed value of 24,590,656 a decline of 380,194 from last year. Taxable value stands at 8,535,702 down 64,659 from 8,669,? livestock losses driven by a 20 percent cattle assessment cut by the State Board. Cattle numbers rose to 90,459 and sheep to 91,559 while total stock value fell from 5,558,835 to 4,792,923. livestock taxable value equals one third of assessed.

Entries for the Labor Day Parade of the County Fair and Rodeo are coming in from the Lima Limelighters 4 H under Cochrane Motors, Baptist Youth Group, Diamond Bar Inn Jackson, Dillon Boy Scout Troops, and First National Bank. Advance registration is advised while nonentry sections report at 10 am.

Governor's Ball Held by Legion Auxiliary for Boys State

Beaverhead Post American Legion Auxiliary oversees the Governor's Ball as the concluding social event of Boys State at Western Montana College gym August 24. President Mrs Hiram Rodgers chairs committees. invitations mailed to Beaverhead and Madison county high school girls, though any eligible girl may attend.

Dillon Public Schools Set to Open September Fourth

The Dillon public schools will start Wednesday morning September 4 at 9 a.m. about 700 elementary students are expected. Improvements include new lavatories on the Bagley second floor, a renovated basement for intermediates, and a new classroom created from the lunch and music rooms. Faculty meet September 3 at 3 p.m. with all positions filled including Kindergarten through eighth grade, music, art, girls physical education, nurse, library, accompanist, and secretary.

County Tax Levy Increases for 1957 statewide and Dillon

The 1957 county levy rose by 3.08 to 32.84 per thousand, covering county funds. Road fund outside Dillon and Lima climbed to 13 per thousand. Special county high school funds outside District 12 dropped to 5.59 or 3.41 per thousand. Trust and agency funds rose to 27.30 per thousand. Dillon city total fell to 144.19 per thousand, with the city levy at 48.25 per thousand.

Beaverhead Chamber Reports Record 178 Members

On August 1 the Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce reports a record membership of 178. Howard Puyear, committee chairman, notes a successful spring drive added 40 new members and that the group now includes representatives from every section of the county.

Chamber President Praises Boys State Caravan Spirit

Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce President W. E. Fry commended the cooperation of local businesses and residents who supported the annual Boys State delegates trip to Virginia City. He thanked drivers, food suppliers, the National Guard field kitchen crew, Elks members, bus providers, and volunteers from schools and colleges for ensuring a successful event and festive town decorations.

High School Band Invited to Rodeo Parade Appearance

Bruce Watters, chairman of the Labor Day parade committee, announced plans for the high school band to rehearse under Orvis Stenson's direction if enough members attend practice. He urged members to contact Stenson and arrange substitutes if they join other youth groups.
