The Beaverhead county ranch owner or businessman can win a $50 silver trophy for the best amateur roping time at the Sunday event. Catch as catch can is allowed, calves must be thrown by hand unless the calf acts on its own, and no pros may enter. The trophy is displayed in Eliel's window.
Dillon boosters press for an air mail and passenger stop. An Examiners edition and pledges were air mailed to Western Air Express leaders in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Aeronautical groups in Washington and Chicago, Civil Aeronautics Authority officials, and Montana senators. Local business supporters include W. H. Mitchell of City Drug Store and others.
Dillon Chamber of Commerce sponsors a western themed window display contest with prizes of 12.50, 7.50 and 5.00. Displays must be installed by 6:00 p m tomorrow and remain until midnight Sunday. Judges will be Dillon citizens.
Misses Harriet and Ella May Foley traveled from the East to Dillon en route home after a three month tour visiting relatives and scenic spots. They crossed into Canada at Niagara Falls and went to Toronto by boat, meeting Canadian soldiers and touring the World's Fair during excursions.
George E. Smith a Union Pacific warehouse clerk displays painted rodeo scenes in Dillon storefront windows. His bucking Brahma bulls and other cowboy images drawing attention as part of a local roundup mood.
Fire danger rises as a General Electric storm spreads through most forest areas Tuesday. Ranger Nelson and six men respond to a fire near Lima. Three class C fires burn in Gallatin. Teton area remains out of control. Sheridan fire, started Sunday, damaged 1,000 to 1,500 acres and is now controlled. A smoker’s cigarette is blamed for one blaze.
Pete Witt, carnival operator, returns to town with rides and games and hosts hundreds of birthday youngsters. He previously laid by farming in Rupert Idaho and has helped the State Home at Twin Bridges, providing transportation and collecting dimes for charity.
Winns softball aggregation will represent Dillon in the State championship at Livingston August 24 and 25 by invitation from the State Softball Association. District five officials could invite a third team if both first and second place winners came from the same town. The Roosters and Finnegans, both Anaconda, finished first and second, so Dillon earned the special invitation. The Pheasants and Greeds from Anaconda could not participate due to roster size.
Wartime ties surface as Walter Stamm recalls Lloyd Lehrbas among Warsaw siege correspondents named for a Pulitzer related honor. A college reunion memory resurfaces via a postcard from Vichy praising its waters, linking past acquaintances to present recognition.
Beaverhead County history is showcased in the Dillon Chamber of Commerce window. The exhibit, sponsored by the Beaverhead Chapter of the D A R, previews a local museum and future displays on mining livestock and early governance. It features over 200 prehistoric artifacts loaned by Mrs. W D Willey and Mr. H C Palmer, with plans for a roadside museum to attract tourists.
Paul Hindman faced Judge Stahl after being charged with cashing a seventy dollar check by posing as the named payee. He shared a cabin with others who had circulated the check and received $17 in advance, then returned the money when confronted. Hindman was sentenced to 15 days in Beaverhead jail for petit larceny.
William Straugh is appointed Athletics Coach at State Normal College replacing Ray Gallant who resigned to pursue graduate work. Straugh earned his degree at the Normal College in 1935 and did graduate work at the State University Missoula and at the University of Washington. He spent five years coaching a successful high school basketball team in Glasgow. Continued on page 2.
Officials announce a 60 day duck season across three zones replacing last year’s 45 days. The Northern zone covering Montana allows hunting from sunrise to 4 pm from October 1 to November 29. Firefighting operations in the Park remain active with most incidents under control except one front burning on a 50 mile span.
