The Dillon community looks forward to the upcoming school year 1940-41 with the newly completed Beaverhead County High School. The facilities are modern and a source of pride, signaling a shift from vacation leisure to academic endeavors as students return to class after vacation.
Beaverhead county high school gears up for 1940 41 with 14 players practicing two hours daily. Coach Johnson expects 20 to 25 more hopefuls reporting for first string bids as a preseason approach begins.
Beaverhead county fairgrounds hosts a two day Dillon rodeo with local stars Frank Fox Bill Swetish Archie Cruitt and Rudy Swetish among top performers. Contestants from Billings Redwood and Tampa compete against Beaverhead riders as the newly completed chutes debut in a lively roundup with bronc and saddle bucking results.
Orrs Flower Shop Eliels and Winns placed first second and third in the window dressing contest tied to the Dillon rodeo. Orrs won unanimously with Eliels and Winns separated by a few points. The Dillon Implement company received honorable mention.
The Dillon BPOE lodge hosts Salmon Elks Saturday September 7 at 8 pm on the county fairgrounds floodlight diamond. Salmon’s softball team, fresh from the Idaho state tourney, will play the locals, who have practiced to counter the guests. Admission will be charged and Dr. MacFarland, now exalted ruler of Salmon, is expected to arrive with a large delegation. The rodeo parade the day prior yielded lighthearted moments including Jack Wernl’s witty reply about a kite string tied to his saddle and crowds footage of parade photographers.
Ed Hollenbeck traveled to Butte today for business.
Frank Priess earned a free train ride by talking too much and was arrested in Dillon for investigation after a mugging. San Diego police Sgt Ralph E Whitney returned with Priess to face grand larceny charges. Priess confessed to various crimes including a cafe burglary in San Diego on July 7, stealing $254.49 from a cash register.
The Dillon training school introduces two new full time staff for 1940 41, Mrs Octavia W Graves of Morehead Kentucky in the third grade and Miss Elsie Morrell Grime of St Paul in the kindergarten and music, with additional part time teachers Ruth Phelps and George Nightingale. Principal Elizabeth Shotwell is unable to resume duties after injuries from an automobile accident.
The Dillon Hereford Show and Sale runs Sunday and Monday Oct 27 28 with bulls exhibited judged and prizes awarded from a $100 pot by the Chamber of Commerce. Amateur judging offers prizes of 25 15 and 10 with 75 bulls on offer under Col. Fred Reppert of Decatur Ind as auctioneer and Forest Bassford H B Sagar and L E Sedgwick assisting. A Sunday smoker at the Elks club caps a program at the county fairgrounds sales pavilion under construction slated for completion by Oct 1.
Local ranch owners and businessmen will have next summer to practice swinging and flipping a sharp shooting loop as the amateur trophy won by Norman Downing returns to circulation. Downing’s name will be engraved on the cup as the 1940 winner and stay there until next year. Afterward the champion calf roper’s name will be engraved each year and remain with the holder until a new winner rises.
About 125000 fingerlings were planted in Blacktail Beaverhead and Rattlesnake rivers by staff from Anaconda hatchery with help from Native groups and the Montana Wildlife Federation. Deputy Game Warden Charles Price oversaw the operation with Pete Westergard Sheriff Paul Temple and Undersheriff John Troupe assisting.
The local Forestry division reports no new fires today and marks a lull after a summer of 58 fires. Wise River CCC boys extinguished the last blaze near Horse Prairie, ending a weeks long effort in the region.
Mr and Mrs Samuel J Laymon arrived from Great Falls to manage the Trail cafe and hotel dining room. They purchased the cafe interests from Mrs Ben Wharton who will remain in Dillon. Laymon has restaurant experience as chef and manager at several major establishments including Great Falls Club Cafeteria Nicollet hotel Minneapolis Harvey restaurant system and University of Minnesota football camp. Mrs Laymon has executive experience with Newcombe Hotel Duluth and Raddison Minneapolis.
A Rural Electrification meeting will be held in Jackson at 8 00 p m Friday Aug 30 to discuss bringing power to the Big Hole Basin area south of Wisdom. Expected attendees include REA representative William Calloway from Washington D C REA specialist Armin J Hill of Bozeman and M H Babcock manager of the Vigilante Electric Cooperative Inc.
Three aliens filed registrations Tuesday under a government order requiring all aliens in the United States to report and identify themselves. Postmaster Harry J. Andrus urged those not yet registered to do so promptly, noting files are confidential and not open to foreign emissaries.
Mr and Mrs Myron Yeager and two children of Spokane Washington spent Sunday at the home of Mrs Dan Henneberry, sister to Mrs Yeager. They returned home the same day accompanied by Mrs Henneberry and her daughter Janet.
William Stevens and William Lecoure, Butte miners, were arraigned before Justice of the Peace Stahl on charges of starting a fire on ground not their own. They reportedly slept in a car after cooking dinner six miles above Wise River, allowing a quarter acre blaze to spread before Forest Ranger Peck’s crew extinguished it. Each man was fined $10 and warned that criminal carelessness could bring stiffer penalties.
A gasoline motor used for pumping at Standard Oil bulk plant backfired and burst into flames early Thursday, quickly extinguished with minor damage. Friday a garage behind Normal college burned to the ground, likely from spontaneous combustion of coal piles. a pre 1930 Chevrolet pickup was destroyed along with the building.
John T. Orr of this city was elected grand master at the 76th annual communication of the Grand Lodge of Montana A F and A M. Other officers include Ralph M. Hattersley deputy grand master Charles Davidson senior grand warden Charles E Coe junior grand warden Henry G Pickett grand treasurer and Luther T Hauberg grand secretary. Rev John A Meeke named grand chaplain Dillon Missoula chosen for 1941 Grand Lodge Conclave.
Malcolm Stone won first prize for the best western outfit in the parade riding his spotted show horse with a silver mounted saddle. Mrs John Stevenson earned the most original entry on Lassie, while Charlie McCarthy wore full cowboy regalia with Lassiés colt Skippy. The Downing family dominated as Ch Downing and goat Nanny won best float and Norman Downing claimed a calf trophy.
