Rodney Foster well known Dillon youth was killed in an accident Sunday in California City. The incident occurred in the local area, with authorities investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. Foster was a recognized figure in the community and is mourned by family and friends.
Rodney Foster of Dillon was killed in an accident in Los Angeles on Sunday. His body will be brought to Dillon for burial with funeral services at 2:30 pm tomorrow at Brundage chapel. He was the son of rancher and livestock man Walter Foster and had lived in Dillon most of his life.
Beaverhead delegates to the conference of Republicans were elected at a joint meeting of the Beaverhead Young Republican League and county central committee. Leonard Schulz is representative from the Young Republicans. Frank A. Hazelbaker and Dan Mooney were elected delegates from the older group. Republicans from several western states will attend. over 600 reservations were sent in with expectations of more than a thousand attendees. Several national leaders will be present.
Two Dillon Gun Club stars Ted Renfro and Herman Peterson compete in the Grand American at Vandalia Ohio. Peterson wins a doubles event in warmups breaking 46x50 and both shooters have prior titles and strong showings across national and regional events. Peterson rose to prominence after taking up the sport a year ago and has since toured the country with top scattergun artists.
An unidentified bank robber held up the American National Bank in Rigby Idaho at noon Monday and fled with 1686 dollars. Sheriff Harry Meppin and three Idaho Falls deputies searched Dillon with heavy arms as a suspected escape route led toward Montana. A man matching the bandit’s description was seen in Ennis and officers from Dillon and nearby counties pursued warnings and on the lookout for the desperado.
The Business and Professional Women clubs announce plans to sponsor a district convention this fall in Dillon. Tentative dates range from late September to late October, with meeting notes from an Andrus Hotel session led by President Dora Smith.
Beaverhead county lines sign petitions to suspend Montana gin marriage law while referendum drives gather thousands of names. Dillon rodeo returns with top acts, street dances, boxing and wrestling events, promising best attendance among four annual shows under Jim Johnson and Monte Burdick at the fairgrounds.
Lee McCracken, a Dillon merchant, spoke to the Dillon Rotarians about mid west conditions after a Missouri trip. He cited good Nebraska crops but Missouri farm moisture issues and large relief rolls in western cities. He praised the Black Hills region while noting foreclosures in rural real estate. Dr. Robert B. Albright discussed current events and the Italian Ethiopian situation amid French opposition to Laval.
The program lists a 1:30 p.m. horse exhibitions and various rodeo events including chariot race calf roping bronc riding bulldogging goat races and novelty races. The second section continues bronc riding calf roping bulldogging and a relay. Finals of bronc riding are Sunday only with additional street events at Banack Street Idaho to Montana.
Several Beaverhead county veterans attend the state American Legion convention in Anaconda this week. Official delegates from Beaverhead post are Commander-elect Guy D. Comes and Post District Commander B. L. Fairbanks, who chairs the Legion state committee on education. Alternates named. post will return to Dillon tonight.
Two major events headline the Dillon rodeo weekend with a Saturday boxing card at city hall featuring five 4 round bouts for the Dillon Boxing club. Main event pairs Francis Gibbons of Dillon against Jack McLenegan of Butte for a renewed score.
County Agent Bernard Williams says gopher extermination in the area will be discontinued this winter and resume early next spring with increased vigor due to the bubonic plague threat. Poisoning near Dillon was halted late in the season but authorities plan an intensive drive next year.
The Riverside Country club enjoyed an afternoon at Mrs Floree Ditty’s West Side home with a social gathering. She welcomed members and guests for a cordial visit and light refreshments.
Montana Normal's Bulldogs are listed as standout contenders for football among smaller colleges by state writers. A Missoula sports writer notes Montana Normal of Dillon, the School of Mines and Intermountain Union as potential minor league football talents this fall, citing last season's 13 to 0 win by Montana Normal over the Miney and Intermountain Union’s 6 to 0 victory over Whitworth of Spokane.
Beaverhead county high welcomes several new instructors as the fall term opens. Jean Ballard will lead music, Edwin Eagle will teach mathematics, Marjorie Foote takes home economics, while Ruby Rogness continues Spanish and Latin. Principal J. B. Monroe announced the changes after the school board meeting.
The Beaverhead county commissioners hold a regular session on August 6 1986 with Commissioners Martin Jackson Edgar Rife and W B Hartwig and Clerk Albert Baker presiding. Minutes of prior meetings and the budget were read and approved. The bond of Justice of Wisdom Township George W Helming was approved along with additional depository securities. The board also acts as the county old age pension commission.
A Ford truck stolen from near the training school last Wednesday noon was recovered that night abandoned near the river bridge north of Dillon after a 125 mile run. No damage or stolen tools were found. Owner Guido Shafer witnessed the theft but did not identify the culprits. LeRoy Miller is jailed on charges of passing worthless checks in Armstead, about 35 dollars total, signed with a Grant rancher’s name. He was arrested in Armstead Saturday and will be arraigned in district court next Monday.
The deaths of Will Rogers and Wiley Post in Alaska last Thursday stunned local residents who admired Rogers as a top theater draw. News reached Dillon via radio flashes Friday morning and the shock mirrored national sorrow.
The Montana liquor control board denies rumors that they would ease up on gambling and confirms they will continue to enforce anti gaming laws. State officers will act against any violations found during their rounds despite incorrect reports and public speculation.
