A three day Dillon celebration will feature a full amusement program with multiple attractions booked for the county fair. Local organizers promise entertainment for families with rides games and performances across the event.
Beaverhead County fair organizers announce a week of racing and entertainment starting September 22 with cash prizes for events. D A Galt coordinates entries due by September 15, while gatherings feature merchants demonstrations in the First National Wool Warehouse, Chief Tendoy and his Indians, Pacific States Shows carnival, a parade, night aerial acts, and a six hundred seat grandstand. Daily events include a five mile cowboy relay, two running races for Beaverhead and Madison counties, pony races for boys and girls, and a pig race.
M Carr, previously a Dell sheep rancher, bought an interest in City Fuel, organized weeks ago by W T Scully. Carr will actively run the coal firm with Scully as manager, operating warehouses north of town and adding a transfer line, with plans to expand as business grows.
A Dillon fire department meeting approved a picnic for active and honorary members and families next Sunday at Elkhorn Springs. Free coffee and ice cream provided. members should bring lunches for two meals. Afternoon sports are for firemen and families. the public is invited to a dance from four to six in the Elk horn Springs dance hall.
Beaverhead county growers begin delivering field peas to the Montana Mercantile elevator as Rogers Seed of Idaho Falls purchases the entire crop for seed. Prices: best seed peas 314 cents per pound, medium grade 2 3 4 cents. quality aided by warm dry weather despite scarce rain. Notable large growers include Harry Schuler, Robert Bidstrup, John Rebich, Joe Mautz and shipments from Reichle area ranches.
The Dillon Boy Scouts completed their camp at Camp Lowlands near Butte with the last group returning home last Sunday. Several parents drove to Butte to retrieve the scouts and praised the camp. names include A. I. Cashmore J. H. McCulley Rev. H. N. Tragitt Jr. Mrs D. A. Galt Mrs. W. H. Stephan and Mr. and Mrs. Forest Bayerd. Returnees include Bobby and Walter Stephan Billy Galt Billy Bayerd Peter Tragitt Jack Gilbert James McCulley Bud Cashmore Tom Caverly Kenneth Barry and Arthur McFarland. Bob Graham and Tom Luebben stayed to help with cleanup.
Lieutenant Governor F A Hazelbaker reports from his Big Hole ranch that haying is nearly finished with vast stacks of well cured hay. He says the weather was ideal and ranchers produced an outstanding feed crop despite a dry spell. He plans to send hay specimens to the international show and has repeatedly won blue ribbons at Chicago for wild hay.
R. E. Foster, longtime livestock commission man, will leave Dillon next month for Roberts Idaho to spend fall and winter feeding thousands of young sheep. He will be joined by Mrs. Foster and their small son, with his sons Rodney and Walter joining in the business. He will return to Dillon in spring, reaffirming Dillon as his home.
James K Collins, who spent two days visiting at his uncle Attorney John Collins, left this morning for Great Falls. He is a senior at Notre Dame.
Roy Forrester and Louis Schmittroth, noted Dillon sportsmen, launched Sunday on a 135 mile salmon river voyage expected to take six to seven days. They carry food and clothing in waterproof containers, plus camp gear, kodaks, and a movie camera. The trip aims to film mountain scenery and is one of few attempts through the region by canoe, with prior guidance from Rev. George MacDougall. Assistants T Lee McCracken and J W McCracken, Dave Williams, and Bernard Underwood accompanied them to Shoup to witness the start. Low water forced first gorge portage, but they expect deeper water later as mountain streams join the river.
Dillon Country club members including Dr A H Mc Farland Dr W H Stephan W G Gilbert Frank O Keefe W B Hartwig and John Merhar joined an inter city tournament in Anaconda last Sunday. Butte Anaconda Deer Lodge and Dillon clubs competed and a dinner at the clubhouse capped a fine event.
Joseph Schindler purchased the Morrison residence at Spruce street and Kentucky avenue for 10000 dollars. The Schindlers, longtime Big Hole basin ranchers, will take possession in a few weeks. The granite stucco Spanish style home features Italian maple and solid mahogany interiors with modern amenities.
Listing of numerous labor, repair, and material charges for installing a new heating system. Items include payments to Emmett Carroll John Meyer and H D Mayfield for labor, Bergeson Motors Co. trucks, Union Electric Co. electricity, Beaverhead Auto Sales Co. trucks, Dillon Implement Co. repairs, and various contractors. General fund line shows total expenses around 988.55 with continued details likely on next page.
Joe Simmonich of Whitehall won a referee's decision over carnival fighter “Rough House Pete” at Yellowstone shows tent. The bout was fast paced with constant exchanges and one knockdown, delivering a crowd pleasing, hard fought victory for Simmonich amid strong local support.
A group of Dillon tradespeople traveled to Anaconda last Thursday to join a district conference of the Latter Day Saints relief society over the weekend. Attendees reported an enjoyable trip and beneficial meetings, including Mesdames Harold Warner, P. Hansen, Peter J. Peterson, Edith Blair, C. M. Masterline, Fred Moore, Fred Dart, Carl Mast, L. H. Smith and Miss Kathleen Bowman.
The Dillon Rotary club regular meeting last Monday evening chaired by T. Lee McCracken discussed the program for the coming year. Several selections by Faye's Hawaiians were played and enjoyed by those present.
County records show thirty eight districts spent 101835 dollars for teachers during the year and Beaverhead County High School debts totaling 31596.32 are liquidated.
Rn KF M Poindexter and Frank Bulger returned Sunday evening from Watertown Lake Alberta Canada where they attended a meeting of those interested in the Sunshine Trail or Federal Road Project No 91 a Montana project name discussed by participants.
The Chevrolet sedan driven by Karl Tash and carrying Norman Nelgon wrecked when it failed to negotiate a sharp turn near the Ten Mile house. Both men, ranchers returning from a rodeo in Butte, were shaken but not seriously injured. ELENA Aug 17. Governor Erickon announces Montana Red Cross state headquarters in Helena with R A Shepard directing drought relief for the coming winter.
Leonard Innes and Melvyn Smith returned Sunday from Missoula where they attended the state Elks meeting as delegates from the local lodge. They called the convention very interesting. Before the trip Innes visited Noxon for several days and Smith toured western Montana with D L Smith Mrs Byrd and Miss Beverly Byrd.
At a Helena conference of the Methodist church Rev. J. D. Smith accepted a call to take charge of the Sidney church. He has pastored in Dillon for two years and will move with his family soon. Rev. Meeke will succeed him here.
Gladys Garr, Beaverhead County Superintendent, releases the annual financial report covering 31 districts and Beaverhead County High School. Total receipts for the year ending July 1931 totaled 206 860.20 with net expenditures 187 266.06 and a June 30 1931 cash balance of 11 987.88.
John Pendergast and Hans Anderson, who have operated placer claims on the Grasshopper near Bannack, were in town preparing to install a drag line on their property. The device will speed mining and marks Beaverhead county’s first use of this method to extract gold from dirt, drawing interest from mining men.
Dr. E G Free topped Dillon Gun club trapshoots with a 48x60 in the feature event earning a cup. R E G Free led shooters with 48x60 while W D Ross and John Lanner tied for second at 47x50. other scores followed. Mr and Mrs Alex Crosby and son Robert returned from a coast to coast motor tour visiting Salt Lake City Portland Seattle and Vancouver B C purchasing Solar Duplex Silent Dryers for beauty work.
