An aristocratic visitor, a bull moose from the Blacktail section, wandered into Beaverhead valley last Thursday. It crossed the valley with ease, leaping fences while cars and workers went about their day. Few moose have been seen in Beaverhead county recently.
Fifty sophomores received two year diplomas at Montana State Normal College today. Frank Ellel of Dillon awarded the diplomas as Prof J Ford McBain delivered the address on Science and Civilization. The graduating class led by Leo Musburger heard remarks from President Davis and others, with musical numbers and an Alpine Climb theme. The summer quarter ends Friday and autumn sessions begin Sept 28.
J. O. Wedum scored a hole in one on No. 8 at Dillon Country Club, the course's first ace on that hole. He achieved the feat in 165 yards while playing with Roy Forrester C. P. Thomas W. W. Wahl P. OC Brown and Callahan as the sweep was in place.
The body of Charles Conklin, a former Dillon youth and World War II veteran, was interred at the national cemetery at Custer Battlefield. Veterans of the community attended the burial service on Monday.
The new Plymouth displayed by Beaverhead Auto Sales features Floating Power and free wheeling, delivering eight-like smoothness from a four cylinder engine. It offers an easy shift transmission allowing smooth gear changes up to 60 to 70 mph with minimal vibration and rapid deceleration.
Rev. and Mrs. J. D. Smith with Mrs. A. L. Wiltsie of Lima arrived in Helena to attend the Methodist Annual Conference, remaining through Sunday while Montana pastoral appointments are announced next Sunday evening by Bishop Wade.
Members of the Beaverhead Mining association are assembling a top mining exhibit for the Montana State Fair in Helena this month. Final plans were set at a Sugar Bowl cafe meeting with a committee including Sen. Pearl I Smith Rep B J Metlen Roy B Herndon Hurley Leach Louis Stahl George Metlen and William Logan. A picnic at the Big Hole battlefield was postponed pending talks with the Lemhi Mining association on a Good Roads day in Salmon and possible joint events.
Beaverhead post officials County Attorney T. E. Gilbert and Postmaster J Fuller depart Sunday to Miles City to represent the Dillon Beaverhead post at the state American Legion convention opening yesterday. Miss Bernice Metlen will join as Dillon Legion auxiliary representative. Commander E L Fairbanks also represents Beaverhead, returning from Iowa where he attended University of Iowa activities.
Beaverhead county commissioners meet August 8 1931 in regular session. A $5361.85 contract to Dart Hardware for a heating plant at the county farm is approved with Luebben bid rejected. Protest over grandstand construction is acknowledged, dance hall license applications require personal appearance, and a No 4 stoker for the courthouse is issued. Jesse J Brown is appointed Armstead township constable. Continued on page 4.
Beaverhead County High School will begin its regular year on Tuesday September 8 Principal W W Wahl announced. The school remains fully accredited by the state department of public instruction the Northwest association and the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Wahl dismissed rumors of loss of accreditation stating the institution maintains an exceptionally high standing among state high schools.
Montana State Normal College announces the 1080 1081 honor roll. Names include Jane Decker Hern don and Barbara Tower of Dillon and Eileen Helen Richardson of Idina plus 31 others led by Catherine Anderson and Clara Bar ber.
Dillon Montana boosts city tax levy to 16 1 2 mills for the coming year citing lower property valuations. Despite the rise the town may remain the lowest taxed municipality of its size in Montana. No driver permits required though enforcement will curb underage driving. City hall coal bids from W T Scully and Beaverhead Lumber accepted. Various claims from local vendors listed with amounts. salaries and utilities noted alongside.
For the Montana State Fair the main gates will be free for night shows during August 17 to 22. Ernie Youngs Spanish Nights revue leads the program with Vagabonds of the Air music and numbers by Milt Taggarts Vagabonds. A twilight carnival parade and a fireworks finale close the week. Children under 14 admitted free. autos receive free parking at one of two grounds spaces.
At Del Monte California Aug 8 R A Tonini of Truckee Calif won the fourth day Pacific International trapshoot preliminary handicap with 95x100 Ted Renfro Dell Mont placed second at 24 yards defeating J O Cotant of Pocatello Idaho for third Mrs H M Hollyfield of Portland and Mrs Ed Bauer of Seattle won the Northwest women's team shoot with 49 and 44 points The grand Pacific handicap concludes tomorrow
The summer graduating class numbers fifty five graduates of whom five are men. December group has eleven, March twenty four, and June ninety two, totaling 177 graduates for the year. Twenty one men recalled diplomas. Since opening the college 2464 graduates. Fifteen of summer group with no teaching experience. Experienced teachers range one to twenty four years. a dozen with ten or more years, another dozen with one or two. Most experienced hold positions next year. many inexperienced lack positions but have prospects. Youngest August member nineteen. oldest about two and a half times that age. Half are in their lower twenties. Thirty one of the fifty were born in Montana. twenty two still live in their birth community. Fourteen other states and England are named for the rest.
Henry Merhar of Butte shattered the Dillon Country Club course record with an 18 hole 65, three under par with a 32 on the front nine. He paired with Dr. A H McFarland to card 70 for par as the Merhar brothers showed strong scores while John, Rudy, and Joe Merhar also posted 36s.
Baverhead county sets total levy at 30 mills for the coming year, up 2 mills despite a $2.6 million drop in assessed valuations. A new debt reduction levy of 1 3-4 mills funds $48,000 in unpaid road warrants, with other regular levies unchanged except the high school rate rising to 7.75 mills. Dillon city levy fixed at 16.5 mills, up 0.5 due to lowered valuations.
Dr. F. M. Poindexter and P. Bulger depart for Waterton Lakes National Park Canada to represent Dillon as delegates to the Alberta Montana Highway association convention sponsor of the Sunshine Trail. Governor Erickson appointed Montana delegations to the conference where state officials Worden and J. H. Rowe join. the Sunshine Trail aims to run from South America to Alaska.
County departments faced deep cuts as the board of commissioners set the 1931 1932 budget to curb tax levy amid lower valuations. The panel also acted as an equalization board rejecting several petitioned tax reductions while stressing strict economy due to reduced statewide revenue.
