Beaverhead county commissioners set the current year's tax levy at 46.663 mills, up 2.08 mills from last year's 44.583 mills. Despite a 14.9 percent drop in taxable valuation, the overall millage increase is 0.4 percent.
Last year's taxable valuation was 5 669 718 compared with 4 736 511. Rural valuation dropped to 4 736 511 this year from 4 396 785. Five funds showed an increase in levy this year and a similar number decreased. Levies for the funds are listed. Earl L. Walter F Meier spoke to delegates as Dillon lodge secretary Earl L Wheat was elected Montana Elks association president for 1934 Miles City chosen as next convention site. About 800 Elks attended the final day as Dillon hosted state sessions with speakers and notable programs.
Masons plan a October 14 celebration for Dillon Lodge No. 16 A F and A M marking 50 years. Montana Mason speakers include L L Calloway Montana Supreme Court chief justice with talks on lodge history. A banquet at the Normal college dormitory dining room will follow a program of entertainment and talks.
A complaint filed in district court seeks a restraining order to halt the sale tomorrow of $11,100 in Beaverhead county bonds. Plaintiffs Theo dore Nelson Leslie Staudemeyer and Charles Meine, ranchers, sue Martin C. Jackson W. B. Hartwig Edgar R. B. Rife and county commissioners alleging no budget provision for the purchase of three caterpillar auto patrols for the new fiscal year and asserting such expenditure requires legal provision.
GOOD PROGRAM Gibbonsville will host a joint picnic next Sunday as Montana and Idaho residents gather. The event, sponsored by the Salmon Chamber of Commerce mining committee Beaverhenl Mining association and the Daughters of the American Revolution, grows in popularity each year with hundreds expected from both sides of the state line. This year features the first piping event in Idaho and a large Lemhi county attendance, according to Belmon. A number of prominent men of the region are anticipated.
Grand Exalted Ruler Walter F. Meier of the Elks attended a Dillon Rotary Club banquet at the Metlen hotel. Sixty Elks and guests heard tributes to Dillon’s hospitality and Elks Rotarians' shared ideals. Herman C. Karrow saluted Dillon, while Mrs Jeppson and Ralph McFadden performed, and Bill Bates played violin with Katherine.
No funds are available to suppress fires on lands designated as Brazing, according to word received by Forest Supervisor A. A. Simpson from state land headquarters. Such fires, therefore, must be controlled by private interests.
Missoula and Lewiston bands along with Anaconda and Butte drum and bugle corps entertained at the Elks state convention. The Missoula group arrived Thursday, played in parades, concerts each evening on Montana street, and accompanied afternoon rodeo programs. Anaconda and Butte bands also performed frequently over the three-day session.
Donald Light roared back to beat Harold Johnson in the city singles final at Normal courts 5 7 4 6 8 6 6 3 6 1. Della Osborne of Dillon captured the women s singles title 6 1 8 6 over Hazel Mc Cannon. Mixed doubles went to Lansing Waldorf and Hazel Mc Cannon 1 6 6 3 6 4.
Beaverhead County hosts a two day rodeo at George Roe ranch east of Lima on Sunday and Labor Day September 3 and 4. Bill Gray presents generous cash prizes at the chutes with $50 first in broncho riding and smaller awards for other events. A dance with Miller's Melody Six follows the second day in the Lima gymnasium.
John W. Brick Breeden tendered his resignation as Montana State Normal College coach to become assistant coach at Montana State College in Bozeman. He will depart soon, and Dillon sports fans regret losing him after four years of building a notable program.
Thieves forced entry to the offices of Dr. G. L. Routledge and Dr. F. M. Poindexter using a skeleton key. They opened two small safes and escaped with about $60 in cash. The crime occurred Sunday between 4 AM and late afternoon. desks were ransacked but little else was taken.
Reports indicate the J B Mining company at Bannack will resume operations in about a month. The firm is undergoing a reorganization as part of the process.
The city council adopted a resolution to create a lighting district providing street lights at every intersection in the city. The board also asked the state highway commission to allot Dillon 23 blocks of paving, including 12 blocks already requested. Definite costs for the proposed lighting district were submitted. The installation will provide a night on streets.
E L Wheat chairman of the convention executive committee expresses the Dillon Elks lodge appreciation for local citizens assistance in the 1933 state Elks association convention. Piltons hospitality and openness boosted the statewide reputation as visitors were welcomed. officers say cooperation enabled a convention many veterans call the best in history.
Forty-one students earned places on the honor roll of the class of 1933 at Montana State Normal College. The list includes about twenty percent of graduates with the highest honor points. Names listed include Ebba J. Anderson Bernard Gale Anderson Helen Binford Frances Bovee Regina Brigaeman Miriam N. Brown Grayce Vu Burley Edith B. Dahl and others.
Ralph Cushing spoke at the Rotary dinner on Monday about government relief appropriations. He described projects under consideration and several members discussed the matter. J. C. Wedum chaired the meeting.
Helen Peterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Peterson of Billings, is spending the week as a guest at the J. E. Kelly home with Ruth and Lucille Kelly.
Leading gunners from Montana Idaho and Utah entered the Dillon Gun club registered trapshoot during the Elks state convention in Dillon. A. A. Mangus, a prisoner who twice escaped Beaverhead County jail, was captured in Logan West Virginia by Logan authorities. C Flannigan Rector and Pete Westergaard posted perfect scores in the 100 target events across the two day meet with high series.
Harold H. Hanson, formerly of Dillon now of Milwaukee, received a letter from the fourth assistant postmaster general reviving Dillon’s chance for a new federal building. Dillon is among places considered for inclusion in the public building program under the Industrial Recovery act, with action to select a site and begin construction if approved. Hanson urges residents to act quickly to demonstrate the city’s real need.
Mrs. Patrick M. Sweeney, longtime Sheep Creek resident, died Saturday night at Dillon home of Mrs. Rebecca Connelley after seven weeks illness. Born December 18, 1869 in Mount Vernon New York she moved to Dillon in 1904 with husband rancher Patrick M. Sweeney. Surviving husband son John Flynn of New York City and siblings in St. Paul Oregon. Funeral Monday at St Rose Catholic Church with Rev Father F X Lechner presiding.
