Fatal Ranch Accident Claims Beaverhead Worker

Patrick J. Haskey 66, longtime Beaverhead county laborer, died after being dragged beneath a driverless rake at the Andrew Smilka ranch near Dell. He died en route to Armstead after life-saving efforts by Ralph Quigley and Paul Garr. Funeral services will be held Thursday with Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in charge.

Beaverhead County Board Sets Tax Levy Increases

Beaverhead County commissioners approve a regular tax levy up by three quarters of a mill, with a five mill special levy for a post war road and bridge program. The regular increase funds the fair ground improvement plan, while the five mill levy provides county share for a statewide construction effort, yielding about $26,305. The funds are earmarked for post war projects and not available for other uses.

Joseph B. Poindexter a Beaverhead county native and former Hawaii governor during Pearl Harbor era arrived in Dillon with his daughter Miss Helen Poindexter. They visit Dr. F. M. Poindexter and Mrs. E. L. Poindexter while they monitor Pacific developments and recall his Montana and Hawaii roles.

Dillon Rodeo Promises Top Wild West Talent Labor Day Weekend

Beaverhead County's Dillon Rodeo, touted as the area's biggest outdoor event, will host a major wild west show with national talent on Sunday and Monday, September 2 and 3. Sheriff Claude Lay, show manager, says he’s secured responses from leading performers and even a long distance entrant, Corporal Clyde Burrows, who planned to join after returning from Italy.

Beaverhead County Education Expenditures Totals Revealed

Beaverhead County spent 174 896 72 for schools from July 1 1944 to July 1 1945 per the county superintendent Christine Opp annual report. Total disbursements reached 304 896 52 with a balance of 129 183 13 on July 1 1945. Only three districts hold outstanding bonds, including District No 10 with Dillon public schools and Beaverhead County High School.

Beaverhead residents gathered at the Union Pacific depot lawn to mark the 40th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition’s passage through the county. The ceremony, led by the Beaverhead chapter of the American Pioneer Trails association, highlighted Montana history with remarks by Prof Rush Jordan of Montana State Normal College praising the explorers as Montana’s true pioneers.

Car Stolen Here Found Butte Later

Butte officers recovered a Mercury sedan belonging to Tom Pierce a Beaverhead rancher stolen from a business district parking place early Friday morning. The keys were left in the car and a stranger was seen near it before it disappeared. The car was found undamaged. Thomas J Feeley a former miner working on Horse Prairie was arrested after allegedly attempting to pass a bad check at a local business. he signed his name to the check with his employer’s name.

Kids Ride Fire Wagon To Celebrate War’s End

The Dillon fire dept truck parade drew many children who climbed aboard the big machines in the business district after the siren started. The crowd cheered as the vehicles rolled by, the shrill sirens nearly drowned by the youngsters’ cheers.

Small Increase Is Made City Tax Levy

Dillon city council approved a tax levy increase at the annual budget meeting. The general fund levy rose by four and a half mills to 15.5 mills, while the street levy increased by three and a quarter mills, reflecting a modest rise in overall city revenue.

Well Known Matron Emma B. Jackson Dies at Ranch Home

Emma B. Jackson 60 a Beaverhead County resident for 48 years and wife of Martin C. Jackson died suddenly at her ranch near Jackson. Death attributed to a heart attack occurred about 6 45 p m as she sewed while her daughter relayed news of Japan's surrender. Born Oct 24 1886 in Junction Colorado she moved to Bannack in 1891 and married in Dillon in 1903. Her death shocks the county and she was active in social and community affairs.
