Flathead Cherry Growers Target 500 Cars Annually
After a devastating October freeze in 1935 wiped out east shore cherry trees, rapid replanting led to a 1936 harvest nearing completion by July 10. About 75 000 pounds, or 37 tons, were marketed, from five to eight year old and replanted orchards. Experts estimate 40 000 to 50 000 trees, with production set to rise quickly, possibly reaching 500 carloads per year as full orchards mature.
