City council in regular session fixed 16 mills as the basis of taxation for the coming year. The levy increases by half a mill to fund fire department needs while Dillon remains Montana’s lowest taxed municipality. Nearby towns like Big Timber reached 20 mills, highlighting Dillon’s comparatively light levy. continued on page 8
Salt Lake City woman RS, wife of the Salt Lake City school assistant superintendent, was injured Friday when her car, traveling south on the Butte Dillon highway, was struck from the rear by a bus 10 miles north of Dillon. The driver said brakes failed. Mrs Eaton was treated in Dillon and later left for home. Another bus passenger, Mrs Gilbert, had bruises. A separate crash near the high school involved Irving Jandro and Harry Orcutt with heavy damage but no injuries. G A Wilhelm was arrested for drunken driving after a crash on the river bridge north of Dillon.
Stone fire pits were uncovered Monday in a gravel pit on Upper Horse Prairie near Dillon. The pits, buried under three feet of gravel, were in near perfect condition with char coal traces. Locals debate whether they are Lewis and Clark relics or of indigenous origin. Visitors plan to inspect during the Sacajawea picnic next Sunday.
Hundreds from Beaverhead and Lemhi counties will travel the old Trail route to Sacajawea Park for a Montana Idaho picnic. Lew L. Callaway and Byron Defenbach will speak on early history. Prof Rush Jordan will discuss Sacajawea park as a national monument. The Salmon band will perform and a D A R marker will be unveiled at Horse Prairie creek.
Forty four seniors of the Montana State Normal College received diplomas at morning commencement in the college auditorium. Professor Robert Clark delivered the keynote address on Emphasis. Music featured Miss Helen Catherine Ballard, a mixed quartet, and Ralph McFadden. Reverend Arvin Romstad gave the invocation and benediction.
Beaverhead county Republicans hold a courthouse meeting to organize for the fall election. Lt. Gov. Frank A. Hazelbaker is re elected state committeeman with E O Selway and W D Ross named to continue in office. Howard Morse elected vice chairman. G W Eld er named county surveyor candidate. Vacancies filled. optimism voiced for GOP prospects. Dillon’s Tom Thumb miniature golf course nears completion south of the public library with floodlights for night play.
Montana State Association of Elks will visit Virginia City for its annual convention August 15 to 17 featuring Vigilante Days revival, mining displays, a queen contest, rodeo, parade, and entertainment. Delegations from Butte Anaconda and Lodges join drum corps from Butte Anaconda Billings and Lewistown with C M Holbert as chair. Main event includes Thor Olsen of Butte versus Billy Hart of Salt Lake City in a fight card.
Capacity house indicated for a big boxing event by the Dillon volunteer fire department at City Hall on August 23. Ringside seats sold fast with many locations still available. Bantams Batte bantams O Leary and Sencio headline, both training hard for a knockout bid after two prior decisions between them. O Leary, a Butterad native, has 20 bouts with five losses.

Harry Turner, president of Union Electric, donated two silver loving cups to be awarded at a Dillon Country Club men’s and ladies’ golf tournament. One cup will honor the winning man and the other the winning lady in a forthcoming event.
Clerk John S. Baker urges county residents to register before September 19 to appear on lists of electors for the November 4 general election. Registration outside Dillon may be done in public offices.
New sheep sheds will be built at the county fair grounds to house exhibits. Construction starts immediately to be ready for the exposition on September 24 25 and 26. Secretary George W Dart says interest in the fair is growing and premium lists have been sent to exhibitors across the county.
The Montana fish and game department awarded the Red Rock River dam project to Blas Lugo of Monida and Fay Selby of Lakeview. State Game Warden Bob Hill said the dam will hold water for food and a waterfowl resort. The contract amount was not stated but is believed to be, etc.
Beaverhead County commissioners vote in a special session to set the 30.75 mill levy plus 6 mills for general school funds. The increase includes 1.5 mills for the high school and 0.5 mill for general election expenses, with allocations listed for general road poor bridge and other funds. Taxable livestock and utility valuations fell, suggesting total taxes may be lower than last year despite the levy rise. Minutes note continuation in the regular session.
