Dillon Man Named District Deputy in Elks of Montana West
L Ott Gordon of Dillon has been appointed district deputy grand exalted ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks for Montana West. The appointment was made by Henry C Warner, grand exalted ruler. Gordon, a charter member and past exalted ruler of Dillon lodge 1554, works as an electrician at the Ermont mine and has long served Elkdom in Dillon and statewide. Mrs Camas Nelson and Mrs Ben Dallas were Lima shoppers in Dillon Monday.

Beaverhead County High School Cornerstone to Be Laid
The cornerstone of Beaverhead County High School will be laid next Saturday at 2 p m under the auspices of the grand lodge of Montana A F and A M after a one week postponement. The ceremony follows completion of the building front and a niche near the main entrance is prepared for the stone. Sylvester Meade and W F Shaff organize the event with Mon tana Masons.

Consentina Funeral Held in Dillon For Joseph Consentina
Funeral services for Joseph Consentina formerly of Dillon were held at St. Rose Church after dying in Los Angeles on July 23. Requiem high mass was celebrated by Rev. F X Lechner with burial at Mountain View cemetery. He was born in Italy July 19, 1899 and moved to California in 1925. He leaves a wife two children a brother four sisters and his mother in Italy.

Beaverhead Ranchers Receive Over $16,000 in 1938 AAA Payments
Sixty four Beaverhead county ranchers collected about $16,856 for maintaining range land productivity under the AAA program in 1938. J.C. Ferguson, chairman of the county agricultural conservation committee, reports the figures. The program covers more than 257,300 acres with a capacity of 6341 animal units and 53,100 acres of additional range land.

Plague Found in Big Hole Basin in Montana
Dr. W F Cogswell says bubonic plague found among ground squirrels in the Big Hole basin area of southwestern Montana. Scientists with the state traveling laboratory traced the infected animals since April 15. No human cases in Montana known. Residents warned not to handle dead rodents as fleas may carry the disease.

Beaverhead County Haying Delayed by Thunder Showers
Thunder showers last weekend paused haying in Beaverhead County while forest officials welcomed the rain lowering fire danger. Eleven small fires are noted in the Beaverhead National Forest this season, with lightning starting most and one man caused. Two weekend fires in Jackson district Miner Creek and Medicine Lodge in the Dillon district burned under half an acre each before control.

Water measurement report on Red Rock river flow
B A Risley secretary of Water Users Irrigation company received a formal report by A H Tuttle district engineer of the U S Biological Survey detailing recent water measurements from Lima reservoir to Barretts on Red Rock river. Data show substantial gain from irrigation water backflow between the two points. Measurements were taken July 20 with assistance from Henry Eagle C S Heidle and state officials R H Fifield H M Tice E B Donohue. N W Blindauer irrigation engineer also assisted.

Open Season Recommended for Chinese Pheasants in Zone
Beaverhead Sportsmen's Association members proposed a 15 day open season on Chinese pheasants in the zone with a start around November 15. They also urged a one day upland birds season if the rest of the state opens the same day, pending the state fish and game commission approval at its August meeting.

Fish screen possible on local ditch in Beaverhead
A statewide inquiry led by J. W. Schofield and Nick Dondlinger suggests Beaverhead County may receive fish screens on major irrigation canals to aid conservation. The Canal ditch, diverting from the Beaverhead river about a mile, is cited as a candidate for such installations.

Allocation school fund shows gain in Beaverhead
Proceeds from the second installment of taxes were distributed to Beaverhead county school districts showing higher allocations than a year ago. County superintendent Miss Margaret Sweeney noted the census basis allocation of 7.74 per child compared with 7.605 last year with district totals listed, Bannack receiving 278.88.

New Dean Named for Montana Normal College
At the July State Board of Education meeting Anna Catherine Moser was appointed Dean of Women at the Montana State Normal College. A 1924 Normal College graduate, she earned a BA at Montana State University and an MA at the University of California, with further graduate work at Columbia. Her Montana teaching career spans about ten years including Kalispell grade schools and Flathead County High School, Kalispell, with involvement in public speaking debating and dramatics and summer camp recreation.

Sheriff Busy Week as County Jail Population Rises
Sheriff Paul H. Temple and officers kept busy last week as the county jail population swelled. Ed Brophy was brought from Idaho Falls on a larceny charge tied to the suspected destruction of a steam engine owned by the Prohosky brothers on Horse Prairie. Girls Recreation Camp Closes In Dillon
The Dillon Girl Scout council hosted a closing program for the girls recreation camp in Cornell grove. About 85 to 100 girls participated in the month long supervised play and Friday’s entertainment featuring skits performed from tree limbs amidst a high platform between two trees. Mrs. C. T. Callahan announced the program with Miss Helen Doyle assisting.
