Vera Baker, county clerk and recorder, completed voter registration lists for a September 27 special election. 2,139 registered voters are eligible, with Dillon South the largest precinct and Glendale the smallest.
Multiple obituaries report deaths in Beaverhead County. David Gibson of Bannack, born 1843 in Thompsonville, Conn., died after a short illness. funeral held in Bannack. Martha Eliza McKnight, 78, died near Dell after a long illness. services and burial planned in Barnard. B L Clegg, 36, died at Mayo Hospital Rochester. funeral back in Dillon. June Holloway, six, died of tonsillitis in Dillon. burial beside her mother in Mountain View cemetery.
The Lutheran Aid society hosted a Sunday picnic at the Berg Christensen ranch for returning Scandinavian soldiers. A big lunch followed by sports and a dance by the Little orchestra closed the day. Winners included Carl Thuesen, Clarence Sorensen in boys and Ellen Sorensen, Julia Thuesen in girls races, with many others earning top spots in Potato, Egg, Sack, and Three Legged races. Knud Johnson, a soldier returned from France, drew the lucky number for goose feather pillows.
The City Baking company moves its headquarters from the Sugar Bowl cafe to the building next door to the post office. The former Palace cafe site has been renovated into a first class shop by Mr. Schmittroth, a well known baker.
Return of Centennial-J. W. Carney reports the timber fire is extinguished and the Centennial valley road remains in good condition after the latest rain. A suspect described as a crazy man from the Big Hole basin was arrested, found running with wood wedged between his teeth claiming it would stop his teeth from growing long like a dog.
A. W. Adams installs weather strips on courthouse windows and many residents add them to homes to block wind and dust. The work moves through the community with strips marketed as protective and practical upgrades.
Police officers arrested three drunk men Saturday and each was fined $15 in Judge Farnsworths court. A fourth man was fined $5 for riding his bicycle on the sidewalk.
Dillon to host its fifth annual chautauqua August 13 to 19 under a big tent with lectures for adults and children plus morning instruction. Noted speakers Ida M. Tarbell and Private Peat head a strong lineup. the Czecho Slavic band of thirty two will headline musical attractions. A kickoff dance at Dillmont Park and ticket drives aim to raise funds to cover deficits.
Master Spencer Gilbert died last Saturday morning at his parents home on South Idaho street after a two week illness. He had typhoid fever followed by congested kidneys and dropsy, passing away at eight thirty in the morning. Interment was at Mountain View cemetery after a Sunday funeral conducted by Rev. Bennett. The seven year old, known as Buster Gilbert, was born in Dillon and spent his life here. The community extends condolences to Mr. and Mrs. Chester Gilbert and brothers Howard and Chester.
The House Ways and Means Committee recommended repealing the 10 percent tax on soft drinks and the Canadian reciprocity agreement. A two cent per gallon tax replaces the gross tax on apple grape and logan berry juices. Action on the dye industry bill was deferred for redrafting by Rep Longworth.
Joe Faller arrived Monday morning from overseas duty and will reside in Dillon. Lieutenant George Baker arrived in this country last week and is expected home soon.
In a special session last Wednesday Councilman Ebel introduced a resolution fixing the annual levy at 13 mills. The breakdown totals seven for General Fund, three for Street and Alley, one for Library, and two for bond redemption and interest.
Helena Aug 2 Montana’s financial status shows a steady rise in call figures of the last four years on both national and state banks a comparative statement for 1916 1917 1918 and 1919 reports. State bonds rise from 13407000 in 1916 to 32185000 in 1919 with Liberty bonds about 80 percent. Time savings deposits grow from 23009000 in 1916 to 36970000 in 1919 with national banks increasing from 15906000 to 30991000. Total resources jump from 148835000 in 1918 to 2223873000 in 1919. Bank count climbs from 237 state and 69 national banks in 1916 to 284 state and 133 national banks in May this year. State bank resources on Dec 31 1918 peak at 123952000, higher than the 117964000 on June 30 1919.
Secretary of State Charles T. Stewart reports July automobile registration receipts at 17211,il totaling 389281 for seven months, up more than 39000 from all of 1918. Fifty six thousand cars registered this year versus sixty one thousand last year, with 377 licensed dealers, up 86.
The Pheasant opened last Saturday in Dillon drawing crowds to Bannack street. Dan Grant runs the new ice cream parlor in the former Mint building with top furnishings and an elaborate menu. A dance floor and an electric piano are featured in the center.
Rev H G Humphrey pastor of the Methodist church suffered a broken left arm and dislocated shoulder in a runaway near Argenta while returning from a lakes outing. His little daughter was unharmed. He was moved to Murray hospital in Butte for treatment and is reported improving.
Madame Francesa Zarad sang before a large Dillon crowd in Normal auditorium. Her difficult program was mastered with ease and praised for gracious personality. Accompanist Miss Mabel Watch prepared the numbers. pianist Miss Hatch, temporarily in Seattle, hurriedly assisted.
Dr Louis A Banks will speak at the Methodist church in Dillon on Thursday night August 7 at 8 80 o clock. Town and surrounding country invited to hear a man of rare ability with international affairs experience and a zeal for human betterment. No admission charged.
Montana State College and USDA open an emergency office at Billings as a clearing house for feed stuffs and cattle or sheep for sale. Prof. C N Arnett will handle inquiries and listings. Sellers should provide stock details and consider carload uniformity to attract buyers.
The Anaconda Cubs defeated Dillon 10 to 6 in a Sunday ball game played in this city at the local ball park.
The business district paving began yesterday at 10 30 am with Thomas Boltz and city engineers supervising. Sebree and Montana streets start now, traffic will be halted for three weeks after each block.
W G Gilbert tendered his resignation as Beaverhead County prosecuting attorney and the county board accepted it. T E Gilbert to succeed him. W G Gilbert served three years with 120 informations filed including 84 felonies and 29 gambling violations, with many convictions. The new appointee, T E Gilbert, is his younger brother and a University of Michigan Law graduate who studied at Columbia and served in the country.
Last Thursday W G Gilbert county attorney applied to the district court for an order for the disposal of a Ford automobile and eighteen gallons of bonded whiskey taken from bootleggers. Ed Fitzgerald a Butte hardware salesman spent Monday in Dillon.
