Dillon Elks drum and bugle corps, Montana state champion, captured first place at the Idaho state Elks convention in Idaho Falls. Competing with Butte and Anaconda groups and Idaho Falls, the Dillon unit earned near perfect ratings for marching and maneuvering.
Mining operators from Montana Washington Idaho and Utah will gather in Dillon Friday and Saturday for the fourth annual convention of the Mining Association of Montana. The Beaverhead Mining association sponsors the event with Dillon civic and commercial groups providing an extensive program and many prominent speakers. Local committees led by John Collins and William Logan coordinate arrangements while Carl J. Trauerman of Butte announced invited speakers include Gov Roy E Ayers Senators Wheeler Murray Pope King Congressmen O Connor and others yet to be confirmed.
The Dillon Girl Scout council closes six weeks of free recreation with a Friday rally parade at 3:30 p m led by the Elks trumpet and bugle corps. Prizes in floats pets bicycles tricycles decorated vehicles and comic characters plus best Scout patrol float and best dogs rats ponies will be awarded as 100 girls enrolled in the first three weeks and nearly the same in the second period.
Revenue from the seventeen national forests of Vientana and northern Idaho for the year ending July 1, 1938, totaled 413 676 35. Timber sales led with 225 484 82 in cash receipts, while fees for domestic livestock forage brought 143 812 22 and special-use privileges 23 280 02. Waterpower rentals added 20 317 12, with further irrigation and water project items noted.
William J. Heaston pleaded not guilty to a first degree murder charge at arraignment in district court before Judge T. E. Downey. Heaston is jailed for the slaying of Joseph W. Potts, Wise River rancher, Sunday in Potts daughter’s Wise River yard. The coroner’s inquest found Potts died from a gunshot fired by W. J. Heaston, Sr.
Good scores by Lima and Dillon gunners mark Sunday evening shooting as Ted Renfro extends a 50 straight in the 16 yard event. Dillon’s Hiram Brundage and Bob Barrett excel in 24 target doubles as J. H. Dickey buys a long running Dillon area grocery, Ferko purchasing 126 East Glen ialg street from J. H. Dickey and son with Fred Viel’s former shop owner moving to Salmon Idaho.
Beaverhead and Madison county stockmen joined in a range tour last Friday guided by forest officials and extension workers. Departing Dillon at 8 30 a m the group visited Vigilante experiment station and examined reseeded plots deferred grazing and overgrazed areas with experts including Leon Hurtt Tom Lommason H G Lewis and M P Hansmeier.
Anthony Bramsman and sister Mrs. Fred P. Simons depart Saturday for a motor trip through Pacific coast states and Colorado and Utah. They plan to visit Fred J. Simons, summer school student at the University of Washington, and Frank Bramsman and family in San Jose.
Dillon golfer Pete Langdorf scored a hole in one on the 290 yard No 1 hole at Helena Town and Country Pine Hills course last Friday. He teed off with George Langdorf and Lloyd Johnson of Helena and the ball was retrieved after a search in the fairway and rough before dropping into the cup.
Normal College professor Dr. Marlin K. Farmer spoke to the Dillon Rotary Club about The Need of Enlightened Public Opinion. He argued America values enlightenment yet suffers ignorance prejudice and bigotry and warned that restricting expression is dangerous while noting free speech is often constrained even in the United States.
Smith M. McKnight 76 longtime Beaverhead county resident died suddenly Monday night at his Dell home. Born February 11 1862 in LaPrairie Illinois he moved to Montana in 1883 and ranching dominated his life including eight years as cattle foreman at 7L ranch. He leaves wife Mary Helen Peabody daughter Nell and nephew Virgil McKnight with his past master Masonic ties noted.
The Beaverhead National Forest reports its worst fire of the year under control after burning about 40 acres in Berry creek district near Jackson. A 100 strong crew worked Monday night into Tuesday under L R Vanairsdaile with air support from transport and scout planes. The blaze, likely man made, spread quickly due to a Monday wind, creating several spot fires.
Walter Brown, 83, longtime Beaverhead ranch hand, died Thursday at Barrett hospital after a brief illness. He had lived at the county farm for some time and was born in Palaski New York in 1855. He worked at the Kambich ranch near Dillon. No relatives survive. Funeral services were held Saturday at Brundage chapel with interment in Mountain View cemetery.
Ace Ross of Dillon was sentenced to three years in state prison by Judge T E Downey after pleading guilty to burglary. He admitted stealing two quarts of whiskey from the state liquor store in Dillon during the early hours of July 3. Ross had been jailed since arrest, and had been paroled from a previous burglary sentence in April.
Mr and Mrs H M Warner spent last Thursday in Butte, reflecting a brief leisure trip. The outing highlighted their stay in the city and local activities during the day.
The Dillon Chamber of Commerce schedules a get-together banquet for all members and guests. Governor Roy Ayers is invited to headline the program with other local and visiting speakers. The dinner may occur one evening between August 10 and 17, organized by C. A. Bechler Frank Madden and Farnum Schuyler.
E. W. Rogers, longtime Sheep Creek rancher and Beaverhead County partner of W. M. Sweeney, died at Barret Hospital from Rocky Mountain spotted fever after about a week as a patient. Born in Olivet Michigan 68 years ago, he moved to Beaverhead in 1897 and leaves a wife, three daughters Helen Godfrey Wilhelmina Rogers Doris Rogers, and nephew J. Martin of Oregon. Funeral at Brundage chapel with Rev. J. A. Meeke officiating and burial in Mountain View cemetery.
Dillon, a historic mining center, will host the fourth annual convention of the state mining association this Friday and Saturday. Attendees will discuss industry activity in one of the state’s oldest and busiest districts.
Beaverhead county 4-H members earned several honors at the North Montana fair livestock show in Great Falls. John Hartwig led with a second in heavy Angus, while Charles Green earned third and sixth in the same class. Hartwig also placed fifth in medium Angus. Rudy Platt took sixth in heavy Hereford, Green placed fifth and twelfth in Hereford, and Harry Tash Jr. finished seventh in light Hereford.
Frederick J. McGraw 22 of Sharon Pennsylvania was parked on the highway five miles north of Dillon when his motorcycle was grazed by a passing car that did not stop. Ed Sebaskey of Butte drove the vehicle, was pursued by state highway patrol near Divide after running out of gas, and was returned to Dillon on $200 bond. McGraw was uninjured and the motorcycle lightly damaged.
