Web Worms Move Into The Valley
Dreaded sugar beet web worms moved into the Beaverhead valley in the past week causing losses for ranchers. The green horde likely originated in hills west of Dillon where sparse vegetation kept them alive before reaching forage. Chemical formulas and fire are being used to combat the worms. Ranchers reporting damage include T. T. McAdam Maynard Miller and Jens Christensen northwest of Dillon. West of Dillon on Highway 91 the worms appear as a crawling green mass that soils automobile wheels and fenders. The worms hatch from eggs dropped by flying moths usually in dry grass. This explains their barren-hills origin.
