Body of Richard Murray Found After 43 Hour River Search

Richard Murray a 16 year old from Butte Central high school was found in the Big Hole river near Glen Monday afternoon after a 43 hour search begun Saturday evening when he failed to meet his uncle Dan Scully for the return trip. Authorities led the hunt with Sheriff W. C. Orr and Under sheriff James A. McCollum along ranchers from the Glen area assisting in the river search.

Code Committee Holds Its First Postwar Meeting

Dillon's code committee held its first regular session to set definite hours of service for each branch and to review infractions of the local agreement. The panel will meet regularly to handle issues and cooperate with state and national bodies to ensure compliance. Gerald Beebe Jr., 15, was reported recovering after a harrowing weekend in snake-infested terrain following an accident he does not recall. He was found Monday morning and rushed to Barrett hospital, where doctors said he suffered a concussion and he gradually improved.

Big Hole Veterans Sponsor Two Day Rodeo

Ted Harper post of the American Legion in the Big Hole basin will sponsor a two day rodeo at Jackson on September 3 and 4. Jim Johnson of Jackson will lead the event for the veterans with the Days of 49 theme and Forty-niner dances in the big barn each night. A barbecue will be a daily feature.

Elk Special Praised for State Elks Convention Ads

The Examiner issue issued by the Dillon lodge earned high praise from Ellis and Beaverhead county readers. About 2000 copies of the 16 page Elk special were mailed to lodges statewide and to advertisers. Messages from merchants and newspapers praised the typographical quality and broad support boosting Montana Elks convention attendance.

Canyon Resort opens in Beaverhead County with weekend crowds

More than a hundred people, mostly from Dillon, attended the Canyon Resort opening in Beaverhead County. Dances in the Canyon tavern and dining hall drew praise for an excellent floor and Baxter-Tonney orchestra. The resort, run by Paul Henneberry, features motor camp cabins and a screened tavern porch with beer and meals by appointment, signaling strong tourist appeal.

At a St Jamies rectory meeting tennis enthusiasts unanimously decided to hold a city tournament. Tentative dates are August 5 to 18 with entrances closing just before the drawings.

Trio of New Instructors Join Beaverhead County High

Beaverhead county high school will add three new instructors at the start of the regular term on Tuesday September 56. Jason Preston will teach mathematics Mildred A Buckenberg handles English French and music and Bernice O Hirschman will teach social sciences and home economics. They replace Catherine P Willis Lester Bourquin and Jamey McCollum.

Beaverhead county's wheat allotment under national readjustment programs is 18 780 bushels, the maximum on which payments will be made. The five year average production is 34 700 bushels, with the allotment determined by domestic food use.

Mrs Alice Selway a Dillon pioneer and mother of four sons Bert Mark George and Raymond died Monday night at her daughter Mrs Jessie Smiths home in Salt Lake City She was 86 and born in Wisconsin She and husband Thomas Selway moved to Beaverhead valley and later ranched south of Dillon Surviving are one daughter four sons a sister and a brother Funeral arrangements to be held in Dillon with details pending.

Graduation activities at Montana State Normal college

Commencement for the August group will be at 10 a.m. in the college auditorium with diplomas and degrees awarded. Featured events include a senior dinner, a college sing, and a candle light procession on campus. The summer school ends August 11. Two plays were presented in the college assembly with casts including Alma Olsen and Martha Sallee. An art exhibit will be held next Tuesday from 1 to 4 p.m.

In a Sunday exhibition the Old Timers lost 7 3 to a picked team of younger stars despite a new defensive style by Manager Terry Browning. The crowd filled with cheers as veterans flashed moments of their old form while the youngsters edged ahead with timely hitting and the reserve kept score.

Terry Browning disposed of his interests in Terry’s popular soft drink place and card room in the Andrus hotel to Harry J. Andrus. The new owner took charge at once and plans to run the business as it has been. Browning led the establishment for 15 years and made many friends nationwide. He received offers but has no future plans yet. Andrus intends to continue the successful management.
