Al Gruwell Dies After Long Illness in Dillon

Albert C. Gruwell longtime Dillon resident died at his home Sunday afternoon after several months illness. He was 66 born July 20 1870 in Marshalltown Iowa near Hoover birthplace. Gruwell came to Dillon as a young man started a cigar factory and supply to Beaverhead County dealers for years. Funeral services held yesterday. Continued on page 4.

Beaverhead Spuds Sent to Argentina for Trial

Beaverhead county certified seed potatoes from Irvine and Cottom, Northwest growers, were shipped to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Twelve varieties were sent in small lots to test adaptability to climate and soil, aiming to open a new market for Beaverhead spuds. Final 1936 crop clearance ships to Pennsylvania, California and Utah.

Range checks distributed to Beaverhead ranchers

Checks totaling 2642.50 were paid to 22 Beaverhead County ranchers as part of the 1936 agricultural conservation range program. Ranchers developed water systems, fences, and planted crested wheat grass. Last year’s crops payments were already issued. Applications for the 1937 range program must be filed by May 1, with a Big Hole basin and Grasshopper valley agricultural conservation committee meeting in Wisdom on May 7.

Play Day at College with Southwestern Montana Guests

Women’s Athletic association hosts a college play day Saturday May 1 with fourteen invited high schools. Registration starts 9:30 am, events run until 4:30 pm featuring volleyball, baseball, swimming and races. Luncheon at 12:15 pm at St. James Guild Hall, plus music, campus tour, and group stunts.

Over 250 Children to Perform in School Concert

Under Grace Redburn direction, more than 250 students from the intermediate and junior high at the training school present an evening concert in the school auditorium. Admission is free. The Dillon chorus features Bill Baxter at organ and Bernice Erickson at piano, with a varied program of folk tunes, traditional songs, and classical selections.

Arthur Christensen Is Winner of Declamation

Arthur Christensen won first place in the Beaverhead county high school declamation contest last Wednesday and will represent the school at the state meet in Missoula next month. Four others, including William Tower and Betty Jo Jeppson, placed in the finals as judges Miss Fay Kirkpatrick Mrs E E Wayne and Principal Conrad O Orr observed.

Dillon Shakespeare Club Marks 46th Birthday Observance

Dillon's Shakespeare club, one of Montana's two oldest women's organizations, celebrated its 46th anniversary last Thursday at St. James guild hall. An informal pageant titled A Birthday Pilgrimmage to Stratford-on-Avon was conducted by Miss Jean F. Bishop, who spent the Bard's birthday in Stratford last year. Miss Mary L. Innes led the group to points of interest.

University Club Elects Officers Monday Evening

Mrs S E Davis was elected president of the Dillon unit of the American Association of University Women at a Monday meeting held at Mrs T E Luebben's home. Mary H Baker was elected vice president Ruby Rog ness secretary and Jean Ballard treasurer Miss Jean F Bishop led the program on The Background of Folk and Art Music of the Negro.

Dillon Gun Club Wins Two Matches in Race

Dillon Gun club clinched two Telegraphic Shoot victories with a 74 score, tying Helena for second at three wins and one loss. Ted Renfro led with 50 straight, while Roy Forrester and Dr E G Free contributed 24 and 25 respectively in a day featuring Missoula Havre Sheridan and others. Sam Wilkinson was elected Dillon Rotary president for the year starting July 1, succeeding Harold Snow. Thomas E Gilbert re-elected as secretary treasurer.

Beaverhead County High Wins District Stock Judging Meet

Beaverhead County High School Future Farmers won the district stock judging contest in Manhattan with 1515 points. Big Timber finished second at 1485, Bozeman and Belgrade tied for third at 1425, with Whitehall and Manhattan taking fourth and fifth. Don Shaffner of Dillon and Tom Jarret of Big Timber shared top individual honors with 540 points each. Arthur Christensen of Dillon placed fourth with 510. Floyd Panhish of Dillon won first in the speaking contest with a talk on Rural Electrification.

Bridge Winners Named In World Olympic Here

W D Ross and George M Gosman won North South while Mrs Franie Stone and Mrs E Orr took East West in the World Bridge Olympic local event. Each team received a gold medal, announced by Mrs W B Hartwig, St James guild committee chair.

Don Smith Wins State Flag Contest at Helena Meet

Don Smith of Dillon won first place in the boys division at the state flag contest in Helena. Vivian Deming of Turner won first in the girls division. Twenty two contestants from eleven districts competed, with prizes based on writing and declamation on The History of the United States Flag.

Beaverhead county's April district court term closed with several rulings. Harris Parker won $1500 damages against John H. Noonan. Clay Patterson won a recovery suit against Frank McKenzie. D W Paddock and F H Tyre settled out of court. An immunization clinic for children is planned at the training school Friday with smallpox vaccines and diphtheria inoculations. a $1 charge per child.

Idaho Rancher Is Taken Sunday for Reckless Driving

Clarence Ryser a 40 year old Idaho rancher from Rigby was taken into custody after the car he was driving plunged from the highway north of Monida and overturned He was charged with driving while intoxicated Ryser suffered broken ribs and hitchhiker Ray Edwards aged 23 sustained an injured leg Both men were taken to Barrett hospital in Dillon with the car badly damaged

Beaverhead County High plans a May 27 commencement for 53 seniors, a small class, with baccalaureate services beginning May 23. Graduates include Ruth Helen Albright, Helen G. Aged Matron Ida Benson Dies in Dillon Home

Ida Benson 78 died at her Dillon residence yesterday morning from a heart attack. A Sweden native who became a U.S. citizen in Butte in 1892, she lived in Beaverhead County since 1901. Survived by son Charles of Dillon and another son in Whitehall. funeral plans not set.

Highway poster contest winners named by Legion

Ten Beaverhead county pupils were named last week as winners in the American Legion highway safety poster contest. Winners include Florence McBain and Mary Liggett in high school and seventh eighth grades Florence Rice and George Nettik, fourth to sixth grades Jerry Kennedy and Lucille Reis, first to third grades Billy Dean Harrison and Hiram Peterson. Winning posters advance to the state contest. Judges were Miss Mary Baker, Mrs. F D Willis and Mrs. W J Bierrum.

College Group Entertained by Shawn Dancers

Under the Student Activity Committee Dillon college community watched Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers perform in the gym Friday April 23 delivering a new program. The program divided into Primitive Rhythms Kinetic Molpai Fold and Art Themes and Religious Dances. The first part showcased Shawn’s free creations on native themes and the kinetic Molpai explored consciousness beyond other arts.
