George Melton of Dillon captured the Montana state handball title at the Butte tournament defeating Lester Loble of Helena in the final with scores 9 21 21 9 21 10. Pioneer sheepman Frank Landon sells 18000 acres near Dillon on Blacktail creek to Matt Ernest Bert and John Orr. The deal adds 7500 sheep and significant cattle, lands and gear to Poindexter Orr operations, with a value not less than 150000 dollars. Landon started on the ranch in 1882 and lambing in 1926 topped 100 percent.
Beaverhead high school and Whitehall square off in a Saturday track and field meet at Dillon. Coach Gunderson leads a promising Beavers squad as about 150 contestants from rural schools are expected, with conditions seen as ideal for a strong showing.
Dillon Rotary will be officially represented at the world convention in Ostend Belgium in June by Rev F Xx Leschner who left Sunday for Europe. He will spend months in Europe and attend the world conference. He plans to visit Rotary clubs in St Louis Buffalo and Xi before sailing from New York in about two weeks.
The Beaverhead Board of County Commissioners convened in a special session on Thursday April 21 1927 to consider securing rights of way for a new state highway. Present were Commissioners A L Anderson O C Goaman Jy By Shaw Chairman and Acting Chair Albert Baker. The meeting concluded that all transactions would remain private.
Governor Erickson designates May 10 as Arbor Day in Montana. The proclamation urges citizens to plant trees and beautify lawns and parks, highlighting songbird activity and seasonal renewal to improve residential and urban beauty.
The County Federation of Women's Clubs plans a vocational congress for 7th and 8th grade girls in Beaverhead County. The event begins Thursday evening May 6 with an operetta The Riddle of Isis by the Beaverhead County High School glee club directed by Miss Lenore Thompson. Young Dempsey of Helena earned a decision over Lew Mihelich in a preliminary to the Simonich Palmer bout and earned the right to meet Howard Ball of Pocatello in Dillon. Ball impressed in Lima a month earlier by knocking out Gus Rondo.
Walter Brown and A W Stephenson returned from Troy Ohio with a new Waco plane purchased by Brown. The two Dillon men completed the 2200 mile flight to Dillon in 19 hours and 25 minutes of actual flying time. They left for Missoula in the sister ship to Miss Dillon with improvements. En route they witnessed the storm and flood devastation across the Midwest.
Beaverhead county cattlemen reap a record spring with 15 000 head shipped by 31 buyers. Total revenue about 1 318 000 dollars as hay fed beef tops prices at 8 75 per cwt. Steers average 1200 pounds while fat cows average 1100 pounds bringing strong returns.
Beaverhead County board schedules regular session for Monday May 2 at 9 a.m. All claims must be mailed to the county clerk by Saturday April 30 for auditing. late claims will be carried to the next month.
Beaverhead county high school sends a strong delegation to the winter quarter honor roll at State University in Missoula. Harold Blinn heads Dillon’s group with 47 grade points, followed by William Orr 40, Annabelle Desmond 38, and Ruth Gelhaus 37, among 152 names with 57 above the 33 point threshold.
Beaverhead county high school student Frederick Crouse drove a Ford that crashed into a curb at Atlantic and Reeder streets. The car flipped twice, struck a mailbox, and landed with a tree stopping its momentum. Crouse leaped to the back seat and escaped with minor bruises.
