Northern Pacific Leader Outlines Montana Land Policy and Growth

Miles City April 18 President Howard Elliott could not attend the Stockgrowers convention due to illness. Alexander Tingling read his remarks on Eastern Montana and the Northern Pacific. Elliott says the railroad and state share a longstanding partnership and outlines land sales, survey efforts, and investments to promote Montana development including demonstration farms, better farming trains, and expanded rail facilities. He notes the company sold 457,201 acres in 1910 and totals 6,523,750 acres in Montana since inception, with most sales to settlers and stockmen and minimal tax data available. He defends land policy and emphasizes not funding dividends with land proceeds, while highlighting extensive improvements and the need for settlers to realize Montana's resources.
