Justice Lew L. Callaway will attend Scout Court where two Boy Scouts will be elevated to Eagle rank in a ceremony held here on May 2. The event highlights local scouting achievements and honors two youths for completing requirements.
European critics hail Ted Renfro as the world’s best shot with a scattergun after his victory at Monte Carlo. The Beaverhead County marksmanship star, part of the U S team, hit 29 of 80 clay targets to clinch the world title and has set numerous world records with total winnings around $20,000.
Scores of boys and girls will participate in the training school meet scheduled for next Friday afternoon. The event showcases student skill in various sports at the public school facility.
Chief Justice Callaway of the Montana Supreme Court will keynote a Boy Scout court of honor on Saturday May 2 in which two Dillom boys will be advanced to Eagle Scout and six others promoted to high ranks. Fielding Graves and Wilbur Gilbert Jr. were recommended for the highest rank and will receive Eagle badges from Chief Justice Callaway. Waldron Boger will receive two awards and, with Bobby Erwin, advance to Life Scout.
Former Beaverhead county high school athlete and Oregon State College football fullback rank Little is touted as a potential 1982 Olympic entrant. He won the discus at the all college track meet with a 139 feet 6 inches throw, in civilian gear, drawing attention from sports writers.
Registration closes April 25 for a May 5 statewide special election on speeding up Montana highway funding. The legislature approved H. R. 450, referendum 35, by a large margin. Beaverhead Ag Boys will compete in the state Future Farmers of America meet in Bozeman with Bernard Williams guiding the team.
Ilon hosts Montana State Normal Bulldogs in their first intercollegiate baseball game in years likely history. The Saturday afternoon clash marks a bold debut for the visitors and a landmark event for the local program.
Illmont Park will open for the 1931 season next Saturday night April 25, announced manager James Jackson. Following the official opening, the popular amusement resort north of the city will kick off activities for the new season.
Week long practical instruction in Girl Scout work led by Olga Carlson drew many students at Montana State Normal College last week. Normal students and Dillon women attended daily sessions, ending Saturday with an outdoor breakfast at the Boy Scout camp using minimal utensils. Carlson oversaw practical lessons on camp care and fire safety and led a special meeting of local Girl Scout troops Friday night.
James Brown, a former Dillon resident, died in Anchorage on April 8. He lived in the Dillon area about 30 years, left for Alaska around 1916 to pursue mining, and later ran sheep ventures in partnership with Mr. Smith. He visited Dillon about two years ago. William Les of the internal revenue department spent the past week in Dillon on official duties.
Chancellor M A Brannon of the University of Montana toured the Montana State Normal College in Dillon last Thursday. He conferred with President E Davis about adding advanced courses for the summer term and a Bachelor of Education degree as part of the new four year program.
World's champion trapshooter Renfro will be honored by the newly formed Dillon Gun Club on his return from Europe. Invitations go to gun club members from Butte Anaconda and Sheridan for a banquet to be held soon after his arrival. The club elected Fred Endaily as president Dr E G Free as vice president and Clyde Edwards as secretary and treasurer at its last Thursday meeting. Membership is expected to be about 40.
Beaverhead County residents who failed to vote in the last general election must register by Saturday April 25 to be eligible for the May 5 special election on highway debentures. Clerk Albert Baker announced registration books close at 5 PM Saturday.
The county grade schools meet linked to educational contests will take place Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9, pairing county events with the Training School meet. Both boys and girls compete divided by weight, with up to eight events per contest and ribbons for first through third places. Scores of young athletes will participate after intensive preparatory work across vacant lots in the city.
The Normal campus grounds are prepped for a major landscape project. About seven hundred shade trees are being planted with roughly one hundred evergreens. The shrubbery includes ornamental hedges and clumps of lilac, almond, dogwood, and cranberry. A hedge along the gym road and a new southeast campus grove are key features.
A large crowd attended a Dillon Elk drum corps dance last Thursday in Dell. Residents from across the south end of the county joined in and all reported a thoroughly good time. Music was provided by the Baxter Tonrey orchestra.

Dillon Rotary members attended the district convention in Anaconda on Monday and Tuesday, many staying for the full session. They returned last night with glowing reports and praise for Anaconda Rotarians as hosts. O. A. Bergeson was elected club president.
The Bobcat band of Montana State College performed a first concert in several years at the college auditorium with a large audience showing appreciation through applause. Kenneth Wheat and Frederick Crouse, Dillon residents, are band members directed by Louis L. Howard. The over 50 member group featured soloists Pant Koenitz and Harold Slater, with Armin Hill on piano. popular selections were played. Also notes a mid winter blizzard sweeping Beaverhead County with a bitter north wind following.
Courses at Montana State Normal College will be enlarged beginning with the autumn quarter. President B D Davis announced the expansion to include curses in physical education and manual training to meet growing demand for teachers of manual arts in junior high and high schools and for athletics coaches in the state.
A party of 20 Dillon canoe enthusiasts paddled about 12 miles down the Madison River last Sunday afternoon. They launched six canoes from trailers and navigated one of the river’s swiftest stretches with no mishap despite a cold wind. Members included Roy Forrester and his son Roy Jr, Jay McCarthy and wife, David Williams, Glen Lyons, Wayne Roberts, Clara Sorenson, Earl Stevens, Ernery Smith, John Lanner, Fred Endatly, Earl Walton, Lee McCracken, Louis Schmittroth, Paul Stahl Jr, William Bachus, Anson Barter, Ned Calhoon, and Francis Tonrey.
