County board approves petition to acquire rights of way for a new state highway. Special session set for April 21 to act on the road project while a Gopher Extermination District is created.
Regular session of the Beaverhead County Commissioners in Dillon on April 4 and 5 1927. Members Aderson O C Gosman Shaw and J Shaw chair. Acting J Albert B Baker. Minutes read approved. March work approved. Commissioners authorized to inspect and direct road and bridge work and other county properties. Districts listed Gosman Red Rock Shaw Big Hole Anderson Beaverhead. Bonds approved. George Lovell reappointed to State Fair advisory board. Northwest Equipment Co warrant of 5650 issued to Metals Bank & Trust Co in July. Any purchase over 10 to be approved by the board. J D Adams Co claim deducted 868.15 from 2604.45. Petition for road established submitted and filed.
Scores of rural school pupils from every Beaverhead county section will visit Ditton May 6 7 for the annual rural schools track meet and the annual vocational congress for eighth grade girls. The events are under Beaverhead county high school and Beaverhead Federation of Women’s Clubs respectively.
Montana’s City Baking company plans a formal Saturday opening of its new Santost bread plant. Experts will explain the modern process, with a 25 000 brick oven on a five foot foundation and a New Day mixer handling 350 pounds per operation.
Orally appointed official Hastelbaker will oversee local applications from Dillon to Fort Missoula. The camp runs June 18 to August 17 with on site medical attention as needed.
Mr. F. E. Ward, geologist and mineralogist, will speak at the Andrus hotel dining room at 8 p m on Saturday April 16 about oil possibilities in Beaverhead valley and its impact on Dillon and nearby areas. The free lecture aims to boost property values business population and growth. All are invited.
Mrs Genevieve Paddock died at her parents home after a week long illness from scarlet fever. The 24 year old Dillon native leaves her husband Walter Paddock and three young children. Survived by her husband, a daughter two years old, a week old son, her parents Mr and Mrs H J Bostwick and a brother Gerald of Dillon. Funeral services were private at the parents home with interment at Mountain View cemetery conducted by Rev R O Shannon.
Frank P. Thompson of Dillon died early this morning after a brief illness from pneumonia. The longtime Dillon resident passed away suddenly and friends were unaware he was ill with more than a cold. Funeral services will be held at the local church.
James J. Cochrane, a noted pioneer figure in Dillon, dies after a long illness at home. He helped shape early community life and left a lasting impact on local development and civic projects. Funeral arrangements are being planned by his family.
James L Cochrane a Beaverhead county pioneer and Civil War veteran died at his home last Saturday after a brief illness. He was 85. Remains shipped to Macomb Illinois for interment. Services held Monday at Brundage chapel with Rev Ernest E Loft of Presbyterian church officiating. Cochrane enlisted in the 151st Illinois infantry serving until 1866 and attained the rank of captain before marriage May 8 1866 to Frances Hagerty of Macomb. The couple celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary last spring. They moved west in 1880 and joined Utah & Northern the first railroad to reach Montana later settling in Dillon.
Members of the Dillon Country club acted as bond salesmen after the annual stockholders meeting Monday night. Each stockholder received a number of bonds issued for the new course, with most reporting success in selling their allotments. Construction will begin once the bond sale is secured. H. M. Brundage and T. Lee McCracken were re elected to the board of directors.
Walter Brown and A W Stephenson head to Troy Ohio to take delivery of a new airplane. Fred Woodside, president of Montana Air West of Dillon, oversees the sale and delivery. Stephenson will pilot the plane back to Dillon and Brown plans an enix country tour with the aircraft after returning. The Monza Airways Company operates in the state to sell and deliver aircraft to customers.
Senator Frank Hazelbaker district governor elect of Montana Rotary will be honored at a banquet in the Andrus hotel dining room. The event features full attendance and a toast by A. T. Peterson with an entertainment program. Dillon Rotary supports Hazelbaker as he prepares to take office in July.
The Waldorf company moved its stock and fixtures to a new building formerly vacated by Charles H. Niblack. Manager A. F. Waldorf arranged fixtures and displays, and improved service facilities for patrons. The Niblack display windows were kept in the Waldorf store.
A call for readers to list flowers they plan to grow in their gardens this summer for Dillon's flower show. Mail the completed blank to Thomas Witasabben, Box 447, City.
Loft to lead morning choir service at 11 with a program of Nevin Into the Woods Christ Our Passover and The Risen Christ plus an Easter Hymn. A Sunday school Eastertide pageant in four scenes will feature twenty actors in oriental costumes with Mrs. Alvin Anderson as reader. An open air sunrise praise service follows at 6 30 with breakfast around a camp fire.
Richard O Shannon pastor leads Easter Sunday program by the Sunday school and church proper at First Baptist. Service starts at 10 30 instead of 11 o clock. Continued on page 5.
George M. Clemyn, rancher of Jackson, re-elected 1st vice president of the Montana Stockgrowers Association at the forty second annual convention in Miles City held Thursday and Friday last week. Mrs Clemow served a year in the same office and attended the state convention.
The Cash Meat market opened in a newly repurposed building last Saturday drawing over a thousand visitors. Free sandwiches coffee doughnuts and pickles were served and carnations given to visiting ladies. The market features a two ton ammonia cooling plant and modern equipment, with a clean sanitary shop offering meats kept under clear glass cases.
Dillon Rotary club plans to educate summer visitors about Beaverhead County road conditions and routes. A roads committee led by Monroe proposed a road map centering Dillon and tracing the Montana Idaho highway to help tourists navigate from Idaho to Montana.
