DeWitt Public Library Century of Service Timeline
The DeWitt Public Library began with 800 volumes in the Craig building near Al Deke's Real Estate and opened to the public on March 18, 1897. By 1964 it boasted over 7,000 books with annual circulation around 26,000 and ongoing support from local clubs, Jaycettes, VFW, and civic leaders. The library moved from association stock funding to public ownership in 1902, received Carnegie endowment funds for a free public library in 1907, and saw ongoing expansions and improvements through the 1960s, including new shelves, lighting, and climate control.
