Early History of Fire Insurance Firm and Key Figures
The firm’s early records show G. M. Smith keeping ledgers and hand writing policies. John W. Howes joined for office work and later became a vice president. By 1902 assessments exceeded 1 million dollars in risks, and 1903 saw windstorm insurance added with risks in force at 2,403,888. T. W. Large became vice president in 1908. W. H. Schlabach added adjusting duties. Zella Mitchell was the first office girl who left for marriage a year later. The company moved to a new first floor building in 1905, T. W. Large became president after G. W. Wallace’s death. Ed. C. Brown served on the board. underwriting liberalized in 1906 and the name lost the word Fire in 1907. Plate glass insurance began.
