James J Hill to Headline Devils Lake Banquet

The Devils Lake Commercial club will host a November 28 banquet at the Great Northern hotel with James J. Hill the Empire Builder as guest of honor. About 400 Lake Region men will attend. tickets for members are limited to 150, with the remainder for business leaders invited by the club. Committees push elaborate plans for Hill’s visit.

Lake Region Mid winter fair sets January dates

Committees in charge of the Lake Region Midwinter fair met at the Commercial club and fixed January 10 11 and 12 as the event dates pending approval by Edward L Pennington of the Soo railroad who may attend January 12 in Devils Lake. Preliminary work progresses and interest is high with the premium list due soon. Merchants support the premium idea as the fair preparations continue. The Grand Opera house will host the event with the basement for displays and the theatre for country clubs and the Farmers Institute meetings.

Three Prisoners Go to State Pen

District court rapid work under Judge Cowan with a rare grand jury, three Benson County inmates sent to the state penitentiary. Benedict Sherman pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon and was sentenced to one year, Frank O’Neil one year for burglary, Earl Le Nora fifteen months for the same charge. Several civil cases decided or dismissed, and two criminal cases set for trial, including state versus Madsen.

The Red Mill musical comedy at the Grand

The Red Mill played to a packed Grand audience on Wednesday. Victor Herbert’s tuneful score elevates the show though voices are uneven. the chorus is strong and the production well staged. A farmer, Sheldon John Hoffman, suffered a severe arm injury in a corn shredder incident.

Inter Ocean Offers Mittens With Subscriptions

Inter-Ocean promotes a holiday offer giving a pair of 75 cent mittens with each new subscription or with back-subscription paid up for a year. The North Dakota weekly aims to expand readership in Ramsey County, promising home delivery and a mitten bonus for 1.50 per year, calling itself a family paper in a heated political season.

North Dakota Census Shows Big City and County Gains

An analysis of North Dakota census data shows 33 cities with populations over 1,000 in 1910, up from 19 in 1900, with an average city gain of 107 percent. Minot, Grand Forks, Fargo, Devils Lake, and Bismarck led city increases, while Ward-Mountrail counties topped the counties with massive percentage gains, and Cass County remains the most populous.

Pekin Herald Change Hands Reported

W. F. Williams takes over Pekin Herald from Pekin Commercial club. Until spring it will be printed at Inter-Ocean plant, then a local plant may be established. Rabies outbreak threatens farmers south of Leonard with heavy stock losses including horses cattle sheep and hogs. Dogs said to have spread disease after bites by three animals.

Ramsey County Sunday School Convention at Churchs Ferry

The Tenth Annual Ramsey County Sunday School Association convention met at the Methodist church in Churchs Ferry with A M Powell presiding. Delegates from across the county discussed religious development, home religion, temperance, and methods to prepare children for church membership, with officers elected for the coming year and a likely next gathering in Devils Lake.

Cowley and Nimmo Quit Grand Theatre After January

Cowley and Nimmo will leave Grand Theatre in Devils Lake early next year and discontinue vaudeville and the roller rink unless new management is found. They have run the venue for two years, delivering high quality attractions but without sufficient profits. The show will close if no other arrangements are made by late January.

New Life Campaign Welcomes 80 Devils Lake Members

Eighty new members were welcomed into the Devils Lake Commercial Club during an informal Friday night gathering in club rooms. The event capped a recent New Life campaign where sides competed, the winners hosted the losers at a banquest as veteran members and newcomers exchanged cordial welcomes.
