Household Care Tips From Old Cookbook Fragments
Do not use soap on window panes. Alcohol or ammonia gives a fine polish. Remove tinware stains by rubbing with a damp cloth dipped in baking soda. To remove white spots from varnished furniture dampen a soft cloth with alcohol and wipe spots gently. Do not rub too hard. To prevent cakes from bursting, bake slowly and avoid premature browning. A pan of cold water on the grate keeps browning rapidity in check.
Varnished Floor Quick Finish by Cheesecloth Method
An expert painter suggests using a yard square of cheesecloth dipped in varnish to wipe onto varnished woodwork or floors after cleaning. It creates a neat finish with less time and effort than brushing, though it yields a lighter coating. This method allows more frequent refinishing.
