Brome Grass Trials and Experience in Dakota Fields
In 1898 I received 52 pounds of bromus inermis seed from Russia and sowed it with barley on four acres using a Havana drill. Results varied from light seed to three pounds of seed left after cross sowing and hand broadcasting. By 1899 brome grew from one to four feet, yielded seed, and hay, better than timothy, though drought hurt crops in 1900. Rainfall in July and September boosted seed, and I harvested about 300 pounds of clean seed plus possible four tons of hay. I plan to sow alone in the future, mulch weeds to shade young plants, and continue trials across different plots. A bushel per acre, mostly Dakota seed, is advised, with seedbed prep and early rain aiding establishment.
