Public Hearing Tonight On Destin Fire District Millage

Residents may speak at 7 p.m. at the Stahlman Avenue fire station about a proposed 0.75 mill increase by the Destin Fire Control District. The district now levies 0.5 mill since 1971. After the hearing, commissioners will adopt two resolutions for the millage rate and a $434,044 budget.

Supreme Court to Hear Harden v Garrett Case on Vote Count

The Florida Supreme Court accepted jurisdiction after the First District Court of Appeals certified a question of great public importance. The dispute centers on 198 Shalimar residents whose votes were not counted in the District Five state representative race last fall, a contest Harden lost to Rep. James Ward by 39 votes.

Destin Center Reschedules Benefit Fish Fry for Sept 14

The Destin Community Center sets a postponed benefit fish fry for Saturday September 14. Serving runs 4 to 7 p.m. Admission is 3 dollars for adults and 2 dollars for children, with desserts courtesy of the Destin Charter Boat Association Womens Auxiliary. Destin Could Get Second Elementary School Within Three Years

Okaloosa County School Superintendent Pledger Sullivan said Destin may build a second elementary within three years if growth continues, with a junior high and high school possible in seven to ten years. Walton County decisions could delay the plan, as 16 or 17 percent of Destin Elementary’s 634 students are from Walton. Sullivan noted a survey is being sought to assess need for a South Walton elementary.

Destin faces a firm choice to apply to FEMA’s National Flood Insurance program or risk losing low cost flood insurance and federal disaster aid. Captains Face Mackerel Ban Vote by Gulf Council

Captains criticize a 90 day King Mackerel moratorium proposed for Gulf waters. If approved, all King Mackerel fishing halts in federal waters nine to 200 miles offshore. State Marine Fisheries Commission backs the ban and will decide on state waters at a Sept 27 meeting in Tampa.
