Sewage problems prompted DWU to shut water to Holiday Isle during Sunday's evacuation. A blown main jack on the transformer at the sewage plant delayed restarting water on Monday. Water service was restored after Gulf Power repaired the transformer and the plant continued operation.
Fishermen credit neap tide and strong northeast winds for safeguarding charter boats as Hurricane Elena neared Destin. The area normally experiences one tide each way daily, but weekend tides doubled to create a minimal rise and fall, helping crews avoid major damage despite seas and bayous facing rough conditions.
The Destin Log announces a new Log TV Listing feature by Publisher Jack Becklund. The weekly schedule covers area television offerings and starts Thursday, appearing in the Wednesday issue to provide up to date programming information for readers.
The National Weather Service forecasts partly cloudy conditions today with a 20 percent chance of scattered afternoon thunder showers. A Gulf high pressure system brings scattered storms, seas 2 to 3 feet, light chop in protected waters.
Elena spared property damage but devastated tourism in Destin. Chamber president Bob Lloyd warned of substantial losses as Labor Day plans collapsed. Holiday Inn Destin faced early cancellations. front desk manager Anthony Sawyer reported 206 rooms booked pre storm, only 16 occupied Sunday. Deposits were refunded for cancelled reservations. Charter boats also suffered severe blows. Captain Malcolm Patterson called the impact devastating as boats faced possible damage or loss.
Commissioner Mike Mitchell warned Sunday’s evacuation went smoothly but Elena will raise county expenses. Major costs include overtime pay for sheriff, water and sewer and emergency staff, with volunteers also clocking long hours. Pier repairs may run about half a million, while light damage like signs, uprooted trees, and shattered windows are noted. Destination: Destin reports minimal structural damage. officials say roads mostly intact.
Destin dodged Elena twice as residents evacuated again and avoided looting. City leaders praised calm, orderly departures with traffic flowing toward Fort Walton Beach as the cyclone veered northward.
About 15 000 to 16 000 Gulf Power customers lost electricity Sunday night as Elena swept through Destin South Walton Fort Walton Beach Crestview and DeFuniak Springs. Jim Davis said blackouts peaked at that level with outages in multiple communities and the figure reflects the highest number without power at any one time. Continued on Page 10A.
As Hurricane Elena loomed, authorities conducted a door to door sweep of Holiday Isle in Destin to convince remaining residents and visitors to evacuate. Deputy Ray MacGrogan and Councilman Bill Phillips led the final sweep aided by a fire department vehicle patrolling canal pockets and U S 98, noting most left willingly but some hesitated.
