Elena spared property damage but devastated tourism in Destin. Chamber president Bob Lloyd warned of substantial losses as Labor Day plans collapsed. Holiday Inn Destin faced early cancellations. front desk manager Anthony Sawyer reported 206 rooms booked pre storm, only 16 occupied Sunday. Deposits were refunded for cancelled reservations. Evacuees Persuaded as Elena Threatens Destin Island

As Hurricane Elena loomed, authorities conducted a door to door sweep of Holiday Isle in Destin to convince remaining residents and visitors to evacuate. Deputy Ray MacGrogan and Councilman Bill Phillips led the final sweep aided by a fire department vehicle patrolling canal pockets and U S 98, noting most left willingly but some hesitated.
