County officials denied rumors that U S 98 would close as Hurricane Elena neared. Only Gulfshore Drive on Holiday Isle flooded briefly on Friday morning. Roadblocks blocked entry to Destin unless residents or business owners, lifted late Friday night.
Destin Ace Hardware spokesmen say acetone will probably work on sticky window tape and was used on their own windows. Gulf Ace Hardware Store recommends lacquer thinner or an alcohol solution. After using thinner, wipe with a clean dry rag to remove oily residue.
Despitestormy seas and gusty winds the Destin Coast Guard Station faced few problems during Hurricanes Elena threat. A spokesman noted it was hectic but nothing major as boats in the harbor dragged anchors and were realigned and reanchored. People began moving boats back to the docks.
The National Weather Service forecasts mostly sunny skies on Sunday with highs in the upper 80s and northerly winds 15 to 25 mph. A 20 percent chance of showers Sunday night with lows near 70. Monday brings partly cloudy skies and a 50 percent chance of thundershowers with highs in the mid 80s. Production notes mention Saturday delay due to Hurricane Elena.
Elena passed offshore and Destin residents began returning home as Holiday Isle avoided breaches. City officials at the Emergency Operations Center coordinated response with deputies, firemen, EMS and patrols. Forecasts shifted, predicting Elena to hit as a category three near Pensacola to Appalachacola before turning east.
Destin and the South Walton peninsula waited through a tense hurricane ordeal as Elena threatened the Gulf. The city dodged a direct hit, sparing life and coastline but prompting widespread evacuation notices and a shield of plywood as officials warned of possible damage.
Okaloosa County officials say the mandatory evacuation for Destin Holiday Isle Okaloosa Island and areas south of U S 98 proceeded smoothly with only about 10 percent defying the order. Sheriff Larry Gilbert called it beautiful noting residents did as told while County Commissioner Bill Peebles Jr warned of future challenges if advance notice is lacking. The region faced damage on Okaloosa Island Pier as Elena passed with 100 mph winds and heavy rains threatening the Panhandle.
Residents stock up as Elena nears the Florida Panhandle. Hardware stores, gas stations, and drugstores report brisk sales of masking tape batteries flashlights candles rope and lamp oil while condominiums and boat owners join the rush. Continued on Page 6A.
