County Refuses Paying Request in Crystal Beach Road Row
Destin resident John D. Radford told Okaloosa County commissioners they will not pave or stabilize the dirt road he cleared at his own expense. The board said dirt roads are not accepted unless upgraded to paving or clay, and a hearing on forming a special taxing district will be held in three weeks. Radford said the road was once county maintained and he has spent about $1,000 clearing it, with the section still a pig trail.

Destin residents debate incorporation as spokesman Bill Shirah argues that including certain undeveloped parcels in the city boundaries could reduce opposition and enable better growth control. He notes county services and sheriff presence, urges avoiding “scare tactics,” and cites a single-member county commissioner option as a path for Destin residents.
