Pilots credit Air Force jets with saving life over Gulf

Dr J Clayton Davie, a Birmingham neurosurgeon, says two Eglin AFB fighters saved his life after he dozed at 18,000 feet aboard a Piper Cheyenne. He was solo flying from Birmingham to Destin when the plane veered into Eglin Gulf test range, radar tracking the silent cruise. Davie, 51, on autopilot, believes weather and pressurization concerns may have contributed to the lapse. The pilots located him asleep and directed him back, ending a dangerous midair drift far from shore.
