Harbor Board considers a fuel tax at boat docks to fund a harbor master and other needs. Board member Jerry LaChapelle notes two councilmen heard that harbor workers wouldn’t object. Long-line fishing vessels would be exempt. Environmental impact fees are also considered. Legality of these methods is in doubt.
The Sons of Italy Jos. B. Franzalia Lodge No. 2422 hosts its seventh Festa Italian at Fort Walton Square on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 30 p.m. Proceeds support local and national charities. Music and handmade Italian foods including pasta featured.
Benefit planned by American Legion Post 296 honors the Cecil Smith family with a fish fry Saturday at the Legion Hall on Main Street. Dr J Clayton Davie, a Birmingham neurosurgeon, says two Eglin AFB fighters saved his life after he dozed at 18,000 feet aboard a Piper Cheyenne. He was solo flying from Birmingham to Destin when the plane veered into Eglin Gulf test range, radar tracking the silent cruise. Davie, 51, on autopilot, believes weather and pressurization concerns may have contributed to the lapse. The pilots located him asleep and directed him back, ending a dangerous midair drift far from shore.
