The Destin Fire Department plans to hire four new firefighters but will wait for tax money to arrive, with last year’s funds coming in by late November. Six applied, four passed both tests, and the four likely will be hired two at a time, bringing total paid firefighters to 11.
City Hall at 415 Mountain Drive expands to second floor housing the library city manager Ingrid Kreis executive secretary Michele Kubitschek Platt and related offices. The expansion adds 550 dollars per month in rent and increases space for Dorman’s administration.
Half the Destin Fishing Rodeo completed and three records already set. A Red Snapper of 46 pounds 8 ounces and a 64 pound 4 ounce Grouper were landed aboard Capt. Kelly Windes Sunrise. On Oct 12 an Amberjack weighing 90 pounds 4 ounces topped the marks aboard Capt. Gary Jarvis Back Down.

The Destin Community Center questions a large retention pond dug on its property. Former president Don Hobart reportedly requested the county dig it to ease drainage, but the current board led by Bill Shirah fears it could become permanent. City Manager Jack Dorman says county engineer Dave Heinrich designed the pond at Hobart’s request and views it as temporary.
DRIs require approvals from eight state agencies and the local government. The Planning Commission will hear the Renaissance Plaza Hotel DRI this Thursday as part of a lengthy regional impact review before page 6A continuation.
The 444 room Riviera Plaza Hotel, a 17 story tower with meeting rooms health club and shopping, is slated as Destin’s first Development of Regional Impact project. The 15 acre site on U S 98 near the old Riviera Beach Motel will undergo two phases with additional 17 story towers in the second phase.
The Destin Chamber of Commerce mails a seven page survey to members to chart economic development for five years. Led by Gary Long, the effort seeks community driven growth, assessing local needs and what goods and services should be produced locally.
DER officials report nitrogen and phosphorus from Destin Water Users percolation ponds polluting Old Pass Lagoon via groundwater runoff. Tests show current fecal coliform levels are not yet a health risk, but nitrogen input remains a primary concern. DWA has 15 days to respond with a remediation plan.
