Destin Chamber sets talk on White Point Piney Point bridge

The Destin Chamber of Commerce Coffee Friday will feature Mike Moore from Muller Engineering of Tallahassee. He will discuss bridge building for the proposed White Point Piney Point bridge over Choctawhatchee Bay. Coffee starts Friday morning Oct 11 at 7:30 a.m. at the Western Sizzler on U S 98 Destin.

Destin Moves Toward Occupation License Deadline

The city has sold about 96 occupational licenses at an average $130 to $140 each, bringing $8,000 to $10,000 to the city. The deadline to buy licenses is midnight October 31. An annual license is now required to operate a business or practice a profession in Destin, with fees varying by ordinance based on employees, seats, rentals, or other criteria. City Manager Jack Dorman said random checks will begin November 5 to verify licensing.

Jet fighters guide sleeping pilot from Gulf to Destin

A Birmingham man flying a twin engine Piper Cheyenne from Birmingham to Destin wandered into Eglins restricted airspace and slept at 18 000 feet over the Gulf. Two Air Force jets from Eglin escorted the craft back to Destin Airport after awakening the pilot. The incident occurred shortly after 7 am Tuesday as Jacksonville Center alerted Eglin authorities.

City endorses well drilling along Northwest Florida coast

Destin city council unanimously backs a $3 million NWFWMD plan to drill about 45 wells along the Panhandle coast. The district seeks coastwide support before seeking funding from Congress in late October to monitor groundwater, protect public supplies, and prevent saltwater intrusion as growth strains water systems.

Sullivan Survey Funds Destin Elementary Growth Plan

A state survey team is to return to Destin Elementary School to document growth for future expansion funding. Superintendent Pledger Sullivan said on Tuesday. The school board also voted to contact the state Department of Education to request a survey team for Okaloosa County as Destin Elementary uses six portable classrooms due to rapid growth.

White Point bridge favored in Okaloosa County poll

Okaloosa residents at Shrine Fair backed building a Choctawhatchee Bay bridge at White Point over other sites. They also supported a state lottery for revenue and using ad valorem taxes to attract industry rather than tourism. The Republican poll, not scientific, tallied 588 ballots with emphasis on Ward Harden and the lottery.
