Mitchell and Wise face off as Amendment Five could redraw county representation. Wise argues for local input on districting while Mitchell warns of ward politics and unequal service. An Ethics Commission probe into Mitchell’s land dealings on Okaloosa Island adds tension to the district race.

Cooper Wells Contend For Fire District Slot

Destin voters choose between James Wells and Jack Cooper for the remaining vacancy on the Destin Fire District commission. Wells, an Okaloosa County deputy and Destin Volunteer Fire Department reserve member since 1967, wants more paid personnel and a part time inspector to save costs, while questioning a ladder truck and predicting a millage increase. Cooper, a 25 year Destin resident and contractor, cites building codes knowledge and foresees department growth with two stations sufficient for now but future expansion possible. An uncontested seat has been filled by Bob Lloyd.
