Destin residents braved 50 degree temps to pull levers for incorporation. Final tally 1,135 to 1,027 in favor with 322 absentee ballots requested. Officials call results unofficial until absentees counted. celebration at CFI leader Bob McIlroy's home.
Destin voters backed Ronald Reagan with 1956 votes to Mondale's 286 in a statewide landslide. James Wells defeated Jack Cooper 1015 to 773 for the Group 4 seat on the Destin Fire Control District Board. Precinct 20 approved seven of eight state constitutional amendments, with Amendment 4 defeated 1086 to 606 and Amendment 5 approved 1412 to 456. All seven judges were retained. Long lines at the Community Center caused countywide congestion, prompting talk of more polling places and possible precinct redrawing next year.
ODI officers conceded a tight defeat of 108 votes with about 300 absentee ballots yet to be counted. Lloyd Taylor said the outcome would likely stand, noting Citizens For Incorporation started earlier and that ODI’s late push was not decisive. Destin urged vigilance as turnout remained high and the Destin city government question proceeded to continued coverage.
State Rep James Ward and Republican challenger Robert Harden battled for the 8th district seat as absentee ballots awaited tally with Ward leading Harden 12 955 to 11 923. Meanwhile Randall Wise led Okaloosa County Commissioner Mike Mitchell 17 942 to 16 952 as precinct totals came in. Wise narrowly lost Destin Precinct 20 to Mitchell 1 120 to 1 001. Harden scored a solid win in Destin on Ward tax and boundary redraw issues, tallying 1 309 votes.
South Walton County voters unseated one Mosquito Control District incumbent and backed a single member county commissioner districts referendum by 694 to 282. Crawford led mosquito board votes with 547, Butler 509, Wilson 397. others trailed. A Republican challenger beat an incumbent in District 5 state rep race as Reagan won in presidential race. Absentee ballots counted.
