The 38th Destin Fishing Rodeo awards will be held Saturday Nov 1 at 7 p.m. in the Shoreline Towers clubhouse Destin. Public admission is free and door prizes will be awarded with a cash bar. For details call Rodeo Secretary Ruth Rosenzweig at 837 6734.
Destin residents needing transportation to and from polls on Tuesday November 4 may call Destin Cab Co for a free ride. Owners George and Susan Eller have offered this election day service for four years and report positive public response. Call 837-2411 on election day for free transport to either Destin polling place.
Public Works Director Darrell Barnhill says sidewalks on Kelly Street are not finished. Citizens have complained about sand covering the sidewalks. Sand will be removed within the next two weeks, with some sodding and grass planting still to be done.
The forecast calls for variable cloudiness and a 20 percent shower risk with temperatures near 80 today. Easterly winds 10 to 15 mph. Extended outlook shows unseasonably warm weather with highs around 80 through Tuesday and nightly lows in the 60s. Daily shower chances persist.
A new Metrop oplan proposes six lane U S 98 from the Okaloosa Santa Rosa line to Wright Parkway Bridge and east to Emerald Coast Parkway. Emerald Coast Parkway would be widened to six lanes, with a parallel two lane road north. Expanded bridges and new corridors are included to ease Western Destin traffic.
Destin voters will choose three of six City Council candidates in the second post incorporation election. The Committee For Good Government backs incumbents Bill Phillips Lloyd Taylor and Ted Shaw luring support with claims of progress toward making Destin a first class city. Opponents include Lucyle Middleton and Jerry Najarian from the Dissolution of Destin Incorporation Committee. Najarian now opposes dissolution but faults council actions and wants focus shifted from ordinances.
Destin councilman Dewey Destin proposed a leash rule as a quick fix for stray dogs, saying it could curb the problem around Destin Elementary. The measure was deferred for review and discussed again at the November 17 meeting as council members seek details and existing laws.
Republican Robert Harden, 26, faces Democrat Mike Chesser in a high stakes House race to replace James Ward who chose not to seek a sixth term. Harden cites education concerns and age as barriers while Chesser touts experience. absentee ballots loom as the main count in the slugfest.
Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Steve Pajcic receives early support from his parents as they join him across Florida. Louise Pajcic Jr. praises his honesty and predicts strong Northwest Florida votes while noting positive voter reception on the canvass in Destin.
