Incumbent Zack Brunson defeated challenger Richard Cooper on Tuesday night to retain the Destin Fire Board seat. Brunson won 840 votes to Cooper’s 728, about 54 percent. Brunson is the long time chair of the board and owns Zack's Bait Shop on Calhoun Avenue.
Okaloosa County voters supported a statewide lottery and favored regional measures on Tuesday. Proceeds from the lottery would be directed to finance schools, mirroring the statewide trend and eight years of precedent.
Okaloosa and Walton voters rejected the exemption measure by about 2 to 1, lowering the personal homestead relief from 25 000 to 5 000 with a 5 000 threshold and a total cap of 25 000. Statewide, the homestead exemption also performed poorly.
The Destin American Legion Post aims to form a marching band for local parades. It seeks about 20 young men, possibly former band students, to join and help carry the project forward.
Republican Robert Harden appears to have won the District 5 state House race against Niceville attorney Mike Chesser with about 97 percent of precincts reporting. Harden led 13,286 to 9,765 in Okaloosa County while Walton showed Chesser ahead 1,356 to 1,242 as results trickled in. Harden succeeds Democrat James Ward, who did not seek another term.
In Walton County the single-member district referendum drew a tight contest with 2 413 yes and 2 559 no from 24 of 33 precincts. The local gas tax faced overwhelming defeat with 1 480 yes to 3 504 no as of press time. Several local measures showed mixed support with fire district and high rise assessments noted. fire commission races highlighted incumbent wins and close totals.
Destin City Council retained its three incumbents Lloyd Taylor Bill Phillips and Theo Shaw winning four more years. Unofficial totals show Taylor 1393 Phillips 1272 Shaw 1017 Najarian 905 Middleton 591 Sutton 534. Shaw called the result the greatest thing for Destin noting majority satisfaction with current leadership.
Okaloosa County voters swung against incumbents in county commission and school board races. With most precincts in, Don Ware defeated Larry Anders for District 4 county commissioner, while Bill Peebles Jr. held District 2. In school board races Bernadette Cover beat Paul Petrey Jr. in District 1 and Bob Grant defeated Andrew Giesen Jr. in District 3. Gerald Gill narrowly led Elena Roser for District 5 as absentees were counted.

Florida voters backed Gov. Bob Graham over Paula Hawkins for the U S Senate as Martinez edged Pajcic and Hutto defeated Neubeck in key House contests. Graham carried Okaloosa and Walton. Hawkins still led in Walton precincts as results came in.
